throughout the book we hear alot about goldstein. but it never really talks about anyone coming in contact with him. i was wondering if goldstein is even real, or if big brother just made him up?

in the ministry of love obrien does tell winston Goldstein was real im not sure if Goldstein wrote the book then got caught or if they just chose him as the author.

It is possible that Goldstein had originally worked for the thought police, in much the same way that obrien did.
