i really enjoyed reading 1984. i think its one of the best political books ever written. however im a bit uncertain about the end: the final statement "he loved big brother" appears, in my humble opinion, to be absurd.
it implies that the party is capable of creating love in winston, when it seems they have done just the opposite! they have breathed sorrow, dissapointment and apathy into his mind. how is it possible that after months of tourture winston should come to, not only accept and agree with the ideology of the party, but wish for its success and "love" it?

I think the reason that winston "loves" big brother at the end because he has no choice (well obviously) but because he is so full of hate for everything else that the only thing he has left for himself is big brother and the only way of not getting hurt in a relatioship like he did and not to get tortured like he did is to devote his entire life to big brother that thats what he feels is the truth now
