The smells of a fresh bakery, particularly those of Chinese pastries and cakes...one feels as if such smells could be one's sustenance for eternity...

Chocolate ... tea ... pizza ... fresh bread ... vanilla ... oranges ... (I should stop thinking about food) ... the blue scented candle that my sister has and we cannot place the smell, but it smells emaculate ... early spring ... turf fires ...
There definitely more ... but Turf fires are number one.

I agree with everything Taliesin said (except linden-blossom tea, because I've never smelled it), but especially Autumn and pine. In addition, I love:

~* snow
~* spring earth (I suppose this goes along with moss, but in spring it pervades the entire air and even inside the house smells faintly of the ground)
~* cat breath, and the really soft spot behind their little ears
~* marzipan
~* fresh laundry
~* verbena soap
~* vanilla
~* horses (I'm not going to say "horse manure," because that would be... weird, but I do like the way horses smell. EDIT:See, Riesa knows what I'm talking about. :p)

It's funny how smells affect you. While I was home for Christmas I took over the responsibility of cleaning the litter boxes, to give my parents a break. It's an awful smell, but this time I realized with shock that it almost smelled good to me, just because I had missed my kitties for so long.

an easy question!

1. New car smell (it smells so antiseptic and nice)!
2. Cutting/tapping oil (I like the smell of tapping oil in the morning :D )
3. There was this really weird smell that one could smell in the gasstation where I used to work, in the controll room of the automated carwash (the room that housed all of the sope and machinery that ran the carwash). It was a micture of machine oil, greese, sope and compunds used byt the carwash, and a sort of watery damp mould...it sounds gross, but is perhaps the most beutifle smell that I have ever smelled!

Most are smells that remind me of my past and also of how blessed I am to be alive.

Laundry fresh off the line on a sunny day
Lavender
Hyacinths
Dirt on a hot summer’s day (They even have a perfume called dirt)
Freshly mowed grass
After it rains
Leaves burning
Wood burning in a fireplace
Homemade bread baking in the oven
Creeks, brooks, small waterways
Eternity perfume and Channel No. 19
Leather bound books
Leather in general (I can't help sniffing a soft leather glove or coat)
Coffee and cigarettes and chocolate cake all together (reminds me of old family get together’s even though I don’t partake of the first two)

It's nice to see others enjoy some of the same smells - makes me feel not quite so different.

rain on parched prairie ground. rain dripping quietly in a dense wood in BC
the smell of a new born baby when you nuzzle against their tiny neck.
the smell of a brand new doll
the oil and grease mingled with dust in a machine shop
coffee, especially chocolate mocha blend
mountain air
newly carved and oiled saddle
new clothes
freshly baked bread
chinese food
early morning downtown when all the restaurants have fired up the grills and the oil is beginning to sizzle for all the deep fried goodies. must be my years as a child helping out in the family restaurant.

Cool. Have you been to machine shops? I guess you would have. I wouldn't have guessed, nor would I think that many at Lit Net have. Obviously I've been to many, small and large, and while the smell isn't bad I wouldn't however catagorize it as pleasurable.

Virg,
When I was little and had to go to my uncle and aunties for a week or two each summer if our parents were abroad I would wander about the ranch after chores were done. My uncle ran that ranch like a military commander, rather his father in law who owned the property made him. There was an actual smithy where a man in apron with massive arms forged beautiful horse shoes and other strange and awesome items.
And there was the tack/harness shop where I could smell to my heart's content all that had been recently oiled and hung up.
And then there was the machine shop. Huge, cement, impersonal. But those smells that I mentioned mixed together were to me quite intoxicating and spoke of the wonder of how one could put together steel and bolts and all sorts of things and create something almost living, well to me a child. I loved tractors and earth diggers, I even loved watching milking machines and milk separators. I had to see how t hings worked, the sound was music to my ears. sounds silly I suppose but oh well.
I also love the smell of something else most people loathe, the smell of chlorine in an immaculately kept swimming pool. And oh I forgot, the smell of genuine, expensive paste wax that is applied by hand to beautiful wood and then buffed with a soft cloth.
I used to spend hours scrubbing the wood floors and furniture just so I could apply it and buff it up and stand around smelling it all and basking in the soft glow of the exquisite wood.

I've never seen a brand new puppy eat poop. I'd think if anything the smell would be from mama's milk. They barely poop, and then mom cleans it up right away. Now her breath may indeed smell of poop.

oh dear Virgil,
you say that because you have a tender heart and don't mind picking up wounded birds or straggly kitties and taking care of them before sending them on their way. I often think it was a good thing jrr did not have to grow up now. He would die of a broken heart before he was twenty I think.

Coffee brewing in a church is my favorite smell, I like the smell of coffee brewing anywhere but especially in a church because it reminds me of my childhood and coffee hours after church and lutefisk suppers and pancake breakfasts. My dad is a lutheran pastor and I literally grew up in the church and I have nothing but warm, happy, comforting memories of that building and that community. Since the town I grew up in was about 90% lutheran, all my school friends went there and since I was the pastor's daughter, I had the run of the place, we would play 'business' in the office area, 'school' in the sunday school rooms, 'house' in the nursery or the lounge, we would sneak into the kitchen and steal sugar cubes and plan our future weddings in the chapel and my best friend and I would often stop by the church on our way home from school, to say 'hi' to my dad and beg off a couple lemon drops or maybe find our way into the kitchen again to sneak more sugar cubes, I really do have ridiculously happy memories of that place so whenever I smell coffee brewing in a church, I get a smile on my face and I feel like I'm home.

how lovely Idril, just like you. My best friend was Lutheran and I too have those beautiful memories of the rich smell of coffee before youth classes started.

My favorite smells, some of them, are roses early in the morning when the sun is still weak and the petals are heavy with dew, the smell of a new baby-so gorgeous and the smell of chocolate cake and fresh bread when I take them out of the oven and the aroma permeates the house.

So there are others in the world!! I am not a mother but I am guilty of this with my brothers' kids! :p

For me, it is:

*Turkey on Thanksgiving (I have that to look forward to next week :) )

My mom keeps reminding me, and my relatives, to my embarrassment, that when I was little, I loved cuddling beside her and smother my face under her armpits, seriously.

I once read that our favorite smells often reflect the year we were born in. I guess it makes sense to some degree, because certain things do change over the years. For instance, home cooking or baking may be a favorite smell of someone born in a time when mothers stayed at home...whereas when mothers started entering the workforce and we had TV dinners--those children probably had different favorite smells.

However, as it turns out, my favorite smells actually reflect an earlier time than the one I was born in.

My favorite smells are chlorine, sandalwood, apple cinnamon, coconut suntan lotion, and oranges. The chlorine, coconut suntan lotion, and oranges were around when I was growing up. Swimming pools (chlorine) and beaches (coconut suntan lotion) were a big thing when I was growing up. Oranges...well, I live in Florida, and that is one of our main produce.

Suntan lotion is a good one, it reminds one of holidays. I'm not keen on the chlorine as it irritates my eyes.

I like: freshly brewed coffee, maltly beer, freshly baked bread, garlic and onion one minute after they have been dropped into a hot pan, just picked mint/basil, red wine and melted cheese, ginger, honey, lemon, curry.

I think the scent of bergamot is pretty sublime.

In the summer, our garden is always alive with roses - the perfume on the air is a really magical experience.

At the other end of the scale, I love the smell of petrol and diesel - having grown up on a petrol station, they always make me feel nostalgic.

I'm a complete country bumpkin. I'm terribly fond of the smell of fresh cow...uh... poo... and horse poo. There's definitely childhood nostalgia for days spent chasing cows or freezing my fingers "training" horses. But I don't think it has anything to do with prenatal influences. I was born in the city.

Lily of the valley is my favorite smell. They only bloom for a week in the late spring unfortunately.

1. The aroma wafting up from the pages of 100 + year old books (a characteristic that E-books will never replicate)

2. The smell of wet Arches water color paper. That's "wet" mind you, not dry.

I love the smell in the beginning of seasons, in the spring it's freshly cut grass in the summer it's the roses in my garden, autumn is the smell when the leaves are falling and the first sign of frost and of course rain, and in the winter it's frost and snow and just the smell of the cold day...

With you there - especially in a forest/jungle!

You been to the Amazon?

I've always liked citrus in it's various stages. In fact I love acidic things like lemon, orange, lime, acid lollies and coca cola (but don't forget to clean your teeth!)

Back to smells - there are two airfresheners I've come across that possess aromas I haven't sniffed in the real world - one is called Ozone-Fresh, the other No-More-Tobacco - wonderful, and somehow not artificial (perhaps they're a combination of a lot of other smells)

Also the smell of fresh baked bread - yummmmm...

What about the flip-side - smells that have an adverse effect on us?

There's this smell - I'm not sure what it is, but I think it must be some kind of chemical cleaner - that for some reason seems to inspire terror in me. Everytime I catch the smell, I break out in a cold sweat, and have to resist the urge to get away. It's weird, as it's not like the smell itself is unbearable or anything...

Oh the most beautiful smell of all.

There is a second hand bookstore not far from me... The fellow who runs the place has some books stored in a glass cabinet under lock and key... :smash:

What I wouldn't do to take them out and smell them... Just once. :nopity:

My taste changes with the seasons:

During the summer, I like clean or flowery scents. During fall, I like spicey type scents. Winter, it's all sweet and sugary scents. then spring is pretty much like summer.

One I love year-round: The smell of new car.

Beautiful!

How could I have omitted old-book aroma?

Yeah, even old (obviously not antique) penny dreadfuls and yellowed acid pulp fiction pages. Delicious!

Fusty musty dustiness you could eat with creamcakes!

I think I know the one you mean - smells like parsnips taste, inspiring fear and dread and night terrors [shudders]

There's also one that goes right through your body worse than freshly skinned rabbit - it's this sick and sickening evilitude from new nylon carpet - don't get too close to that one, matey!

Well spoken sir... Yes I am trully taken back by the smell of an old book, regardless of it's state. I also like to see the yellow pages and pressed in writing... As though someone had typed out each page and bound it themselves. God bless old books.
