We are two here and our teacher gave us this website. We just finished reading Animal Farm and we wanted to know some of you guys' opinion on it. Did you like it? Or didn't you? Why? We just have to talk about it.

I liked it, in a twisted sort of way. I didn't like the ending, but I felt like it fit. The characters really covered a lot of areas of society, like (I'll be channeling my English teacher here) the bouregoisie (Molly), the proletariat class (Boxer), and the masses (sheep). It was interesting the see how the animals reacted to Napoleon's take over, even though it was hard because I can see how that could happen in our own society. I don't like to think about it, but it just goes to show how intrinsically language is interwoven in politics. I think there is a thread on this already, about how language controls thought, but I think it's appropriate here, too. We know that thought controls language, but saying certain words can cause people to think a certain way. But, for futher conversation on that topic, you might want to check out that other thread.

"Animal farm" and "1984" are prophetical, because both of the books were written before the communists took the power in my country and unfortunately the situation during the communism was exactly as described in the book. Moses, the tame raven, symbolizes the religion, and during the regieme they were telling us that there is no such thing as God, heaven, and everything that goes with it. There were secret agents of the so called "state security" who were watching the others entering the churches on Easter or Christmas. Then they were reported and the people were losing their jobs because of this. They even declared that Rock & Roll music is decadent and can only destroy the values of the people. The signals of the western radio stations were purposly jammed and it was forbiden to listen Elvis Presley or The Beetles. Many mass graves were found with people who were sent to forced labour camps just because they dared to have an opinion, which was different from the established one. Every political party apart from the communist was forbiden. My personal opinion is that for the people who didn't suffer the atrocities of the communism, "Animal farm" is just a well written book that should be discussed in class. Imagine your teacher being sent to a consentration camp just for letting you know that such book exists.
