View Full Version : Farewell, Adieu and So Long

As my farewell message to this forum, I will start with a true story from my own experience.

I left my small hometown when I was 17 and moved to San Francisco with two high school buddies. One of the first things that happened to me was getting hit on by gay men on the street. I didn't know what to make of it. Both of my parents would have been mortified to even hear the word homosexual spoken aloud. I also had many other bewildering experiences of a non-sexual nature during the time I lived in San Francisco. All of this left me with the inescapable conclusion that my parents hadn't prepared me for the real world. By trying to "protect" me from the truth, they had created a babe in the woods.

I see the same type of mentality in this forum. Teenagers are deemed too vulunerable to read about ordinary sex (as if they already didn't know a lot about it.) Curse words are considered a corrupting influence on them (although they have already heard most if not all of the words without turning depraved.) The sanctimonious rules of this forum are a stalking horse for conformity to certain values that should be questioned and not slavishly obeyed. If they were applied to the world at large, we would raise a generation of young people who wouldn't know how to function when they entered adult society. Is that a desirable goal?

I've got news for everyone: Dwight Eisenhower is no longer president, the sexual revolution happened 40 years ago, "Ozzie and Harriet" has been replaced on TV by "Will and Grace" and "Sex and the City." We can't go back to the 1950s because the world has been changed forever. Get over it.

Politics is not permitted to be discussed at this forum, but anyone who disagrees with political correctness is labeled sexist, racist or uncivilized. That's xenophobia and the worst kind of politics, practiced in every totalitarian society. To moderators who enforce the prudish rules I'll repeat the words of Don Pearce, a personal friend and the author of "Cool Hand Luke": Calling it your job doesn't make it right.

For the record I don't write smut or pornography. Some of my writing is a little risque, but it's tame by today's standards, and risque has been part of classic literature for hundreds of years. Read Molliere or "Tom Jones."

I teased certain members who asked for it by making stupid remarks and if they were offended by humorous teasing, they didn't belong in an online forum. President Harry Truman said if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. It's good advice.

I enjoyed my discussions with members who showed they could appreciate wit, rational argument and good writing and I wish them the best of luck. The rest should pull their heads out of this sandbox once in awhile and take a look at the real world for instructional purposes. It's not Armageddon, it's your home -- the only real home you have. You should learn to live in it rather than escaping to an online fantasy world where everything is made "nice."

I too have been a little upset by some of the sanctions here ... but that is easily expressed to the andministration members by way of "personal messages." Nevertheless, it is just a web site. In reading many other people's posts, no one can deny that we are all guilty of shallow or illinformed statements and missunderstandings sometimes. The whole world is.
Yes, I am trying to convince you to stay.
If you refer to my contribution to the "banned books" thread when you mention our take on pornogrophy, i really wish you would send me a personal message so we could discuss it more thouroughly instead of assumeing ignorance on my part. I think the same should go for everyone here.
This forum is only a single location in an endless series of places we go to talk about our interests. All of these places have stupid people, have rules and regulations, have taboos and upset us. Life itself is like that. Yes, there are much less restrictions in life itself, but how much more worth-while is the addition of political discussion here? It would be nice, i agree --and not out of place along with the (i find disapointing) religious threads. But that is why there is an entirely different section for it here.
Okay, I see that i might be digging myself in a whole here.
At any rate, if you decide to go, I will miss you. We all have learning to do --this is a good place. I think that your passing it up is an educational shame.
Good luck starrwriter.

It is a shame to lose you Starr. I haven't been here that long, but yours were always among the new posts that I looked forward to reading the most.

I won't ask you to reconsider but I will say that losing a member that is prepared to push the envelope of PC, 'good-taste' is going to hand a victory to those that yearn for the sterile and uniform idea of niceness that you obviously despise as much as I.

Good luck to you sir.

For the record. I'm quite liberal about sex/nudity/language etc. But my personal opinions don't matter any more than any members.

This site must maintain a certain level of acceptance for 3 main reasons.

1. It is used as a resource for many schools. They would not use it as such a resource if it contained vulgarity.

2. All search engines have a filter you can turn on to filter out "adult sites" if this site was incorrectly branded as adult search engine traffic would drop.

3. I don't put an age limit on this forum, and so I need to make sure its appropriate for all ages.

Now, you shouldn't follow the rules because you agree with them. You should follow them because you respect the reasons they exist, and my authority in making them.

Star - I don't know what exactly was the issue, but there are constraints in all things we do in life. There are outlets elsewhere for you to write all you so desire, but this one because of what Admin says above has certain rules. I don't want you to leave. I enjoy many of the things you say. I don't think the rules surpress your personality. Actually they might enhance your personality. We could always feel that person straining to break free. If you broke free, you might not be as endearing. And besides, you leave, you lose. What was it that my junior high sax teacher told me when I wanted to drop it: Quitters never win, and winners never quit. I know that's the kind of thing that makes you gag, so go ahead and gag. But I bet you enjoyed gagging on our corniness. At least mine, anyway.

Starr, I don't think that I am going to forget you easily. I am sorry if something I said that offended you.

If you want to come back again, Forum's doors are always open for you, that is why I am not going to say goodbye.

Take care.

I'm sorry you didn't find this forum pleasant, Starr. But I'll leave you to your own words of wisdom:

...You will encounter some things in life that are not very pleasant. It's unavoidable, so you might as well get used to the idea.

I'm sorry you didn't find this forum pleasant, Starr. But I'll leave you to your own words of wisdom:

Sometimes, I have a feeling that this forum is trying to look as a pleasant place, where most conflicts were swept under the rug and people are told to say the unpleasant issues silently.

Adios Starr, not really liking you but honestly, I quite enjoy your stories. Drop in when you have free time.

Cheers,
Sub

 So many new things in only one night! Starr leaving? He was bringing a lot of liveliness around here lately!!! Goodbye then, I've seen many people come and go so if you really wish to go there's nothing to say, but how can you do wihtout us? ;)

As for the rules, I agree with Admin about the respect... I have said before that I'm not a fan of banning swearwords but I just find it respectful not to use them when I'm asked to...and discussing Politics would bring to really heated discussion which are harder to moderate so it's Admin's choice to avoid that, and I agree.
Though I am sometimes also under the impression of an excessive political correctness, kind of what sub said... but that it is not forbidding to enjoy my time here, there are many other place where I can be as incorrect as I want, and I come here for all the other things this place and its people offer me...
