1)the play takes place on the feast of Midsummer - its also believed that at this time the faeries were more rampant and able to play around with human's lives.Being an ancient pagan feast which has run through folklore as a time to find your one true love - hence the significance of the lovers ending up happy at the end of the play.

2)It was a dream...this is significant, as it allows Shakespeare to incorporate the fantastical world of the faeries and Bottom's transformation, without any restrictions. It also allows Puck to make the famous excuse at the end of the play, that if anyone is offended 'just think but this and all is mended' all that has passed is merely a dream, and nothing was meant by it, if it did cause offense.

the fact that it was a famous feast day also bringsin comedy in the play.... through the introduction of the mechanicals who wish to act at Theseus' Midsummer's Night Feast.

Weddings were traditionally held on this day for luck - again significant for the lovers.
