The three superpowers in this novel are Oceania, Eastasia and Eurasia. They are constantly at war with each other. The goal for each power is to not win the war or lose but to outlast your opponents. One reason why Oceania is at war is to unite their people in fear so they won't end up uniting in hatred towards Bigbrother. It a way it is smart to unite the people but why are they always changing sides. One day you could be fighting Eastasia then next month or year your fighting Eurasia. If I lived in Oceania I would be confused never knowing whom we are fighting and why?

Well I may have the answer to your question you see oceania cannot just focus on just on super power because if they did that then they would be vunerable to the other attacks from the other super power. so as you were saying they only attack one super power at a time because it is just enough to keep the ones their fighting at bay and for oceania to not loose this war. Because if they did loose the war it would result in a catastrophic disarray to the country and its people would no longer focus on the war and they will start to question their government and big Brother will have a revolution on their hands.

I think the goal of the war is not only to outlast your opponents. You need a war to use up the resources of your country, to keep the people productive and poor. For this reason, you actually have an incentive to keep your opponents alive, because you need someone to destroy all your ammunition. This is, of course, assuming that there is actually a war, a Eurasia, etc., and that these players are not just constructions of the media.

yeah id be confused to bt any way i think oceania is just trying to prove that they are sronger than somebaody else. i thinkwar isnt just to out last your oponents but to hurt them ecconomicly and prove that you are stronger than your enemy.

Yeah, the wars aren't meant to be won. They're a delicate balancing act meant to keep the continents in a perpetual state of war - which would be impossible, of course, if anyone were to win. Also, remember why it's important for the government to keep changing the propaganda (about who is the enemy/ally today) - it's all a matter of blind obedience.

i think that even if they stopped fighting, due to lack of resources since you know, resources arent unlimited, they would still publicize war so as to keep the masses in a constant frenzy, in other words hate some one else so they can love BB. also it is an effective way of training the masses to use doublethink because the changes happen at any moments notice and the masses really do believe they have always been fighting the same enemy. another reason is that it must be balanced so that no one wins the war, they are equal at all times only gaining and loosing minor lands that are insignificant.

The other reason for change is that if two of the super powers were to pound on the same one at the same time for two long, they would actaully crush it, which is not meant to happen. The super powers need the other two so that the weakest one can team up with the strongest one and gain power from it until it is in the middle, and then they turn on the the stongest one until the one that was the weakest is the one that was the weakest originaly is the strongest, and so they turn on that one, and so on and so forth.

The point of this is to waste supplies and destroy all surplus so that man will have nothing left to do except work.

I think the reason why there always changing who they fight against so they can keep the proles minds off there own country its a never ending cyle between the three powerhouses Eurasia,Oceania,Eastasia.Really there just trying to brainwash all of the proles.So none of the them question big brother.
