Thanks to Logos for moving my search here.I`m a "newbie"
60+ years ago I remember my dad reciting this poem from memory. I have no idea where it came from. Here`s what I remember of it.

Hardpan Jake from the head of the lake.
With hair on his chest, that`s me!
I`ve pawed this earth, since my day of birth,
With a spirit wild and free.--------------
-----------------------------etc.
What would they do, that roaring crew,
If they heard the news, that you can`t have booze,
In this land where the jagvines grow?

I reckon they`d shoot any damned galoot
That threatened to stop their rye,
They`ll not be here my soul to cheer,
When Californy`s dry.
That`s all I remember of it. Thanks for any assist.
Dick

hullo,
I spent a long time searching for what you are looking for)I saw you on some sites) but uncovered nothing,
Are you certain he did not make it up or perhaps it was a poem from some gifted person in his local community growing up.
I found some wonderful stories in an unknown published book from my adopted father's father in Saskatchewan. He had quoted a lot of stuff but that was only place it could be found. It was put together I suppose by some enterprising person as they listened to oral stories from the prairies.
I will keep searching though. I know how important this sort of thing can be.

Thanks for looking. I didn`t have him pegged as being that creative, but who knows He liked poetry and could very well have made this up on his own. He cowboyed a few years in Wyoming in his younger days and maybe some cowboy poet recited it. Ijust can`t quite pull all of it out of my memory. Maybe I`ll take what I remember and go on from there! ;)
Thanks Again,
Dick
