It's indeed by Maugham and a very good novel based on a real man Maugham knew in the 1920s. It's too bad more of story didn't rub off on Maugham's personal philosophy of life. He died a nihilist, believing in nothing except that we turn into dust.

The Razor's Edge is a great book and you got the author's name correct. Doesn't your public library carry it? Also in this 'philosophy of life' genre is Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer, which I highly recommend.

The Razor's Edge is not available, but Liza of Lambeth and The Magician are on the list to be added.
