When I woke this morning, my hair hurt, my tongue felt glued to the roof of my mouth and gremlins were playing a game of ping-pong in my stomach.

Yes, I have a hangover -- my way of greeting the New Year. Bring it on, but first get me an aspirin, thank you very much.

Last night is a blur in my memory. I vaguely recall a wild taxi ride with my friend and two bimbos to a hotel somewhere on this island and then we ... but I digress (and I'm not the type of man to kiss and tell.)

I have no idea how or when I got home. All I know is I plan to kill the crazy woman on the floor above who awakened me so early with an ear-piercing shriek. I'll bring a wire garrote or use the curtain rope from her apartment. Either way, I'm putting her out of her misery and chortling while I do it.

Now I must try to concentrate on the NFL games on TV. Football! The great American sport of grace, speed and bone-crushing violence. It will give me a great deal of satisfaction to see I'm not the only one in pain on this first day of 2006.

Well, two out of three's not bad. Many American football players are graceful, it's true, but it's generally not a concept most closely associated with the sport.

Can't stay away from my brilliant prose, can you? I have that effect on lots of women.

Steve McQueen was Mr. Cool. I'm his spiritual cousin.

Excrement is denoted with 4 ****.

Baddad is a Raymond Carver fan. That's the opposite of cool.

Oh youth. I remember those days.
But Star is even older than me. What's his excuse? Must be a case of arrested development.

Or accelerated development. I've gone beyond the pale ... and back again.

My excuse is JOY!

Starr,
can you not start this new year remembering that there are very young people on this forum, many who were here long before you and were used to people speaking in a much more respectful way. Can you not just express your views which are interesting without adding continual smut and allusions to porn that might really upset some children. If swearing is forbidden because it is abusive I don't know why your saying what you do and how you do is acceptable. It really lowers the bar. fun is fun and teasing and all that, but why do you have to behave in such a way.? you should be a mentor to the teens don't you think instead of being continually gross. It is ugly and it is not puritanical to hope that one can come to a literary sight and hopefully be able to enter in to literary discussions and just plain fun without all this ugliness. I just wish that you would consider your words.

This time you have gone too far, Rachel. There wasn't any smut or allusions to pornography in my post. Specify exactly what you are referring to so we can all discuss this issue. I don't hear anyone complaining except you.

To be honest, I've found some of your posts offensive. Not to me personally, but I thought they were a bit much for this website, there are kids here. I may be slightly responsible in this matter as I egg you on quite often, but you should remember what rachel said, not everybody wants to hear about your 2 bimbos and your alluision as to what you did with them and some may even find it offensive.

Who said I did anything except kiss the (one) woman I was with? Not me. And since when is the mention of kissing taboo? Anyone who considers kissing offensive needs to grow up.

It seems that smut and pornography exist in the eyes of certain readers at this forum. I'm not interested in either one myself.

It's not my responsibility to mentor other peoples' children. I have already raised my own two children and they turned out to be well-adjusted adults, so I must have done something right.

What you call gross is considered humor by a lot of people. My humor here is tame compared to the website below. It's written by a friend -- a southern married woman with two children (ages 7 and 11) -- and she lets her kids read what she writes if they want to. Since a woman from a conservative southern state is okay with this type of humor, how can you insinuate I am corrupting young readers at this forum with a sanitized version?

Friends, Fellow Forumians! Lend me your ears/eyes!

We all come to the Forum with different expectations: Some of us to learn from others; some of us to share our knowledge with others; some of us to relax and have fun; some to do homeworks (or a combination of couple of those?). This variety is one of the things that makes this Forum an interesting and, dare I say, a fun place to be at. While we enjoy this variety, we should not expect others change their ways and life philosophies according to ours as long as they do not violate any Forum rules.

Having said that, if you feel offended by anyone targeting you in their posts in an offensive way, please do not hesitate to report them so that the issues can be dealt with but otherwise we surely cannot judge them for the way they are or they choose to express themselves (again I would like to repeat unless they violate Forum rules). If you are displeased enough with them, you can always change your settings to ignore certain users and/or threads.

Thank you, Scher. It's good to hear a reasonable voice in this so-called issue.

I stand by what I said. I don't think you understand how you sound. This is a literary forum and has a high reputation. I have often encouraged people to come on board or their children.
But I see that there is no hope in making myself understood. I will not speak of this again. I ask forgiveness of anyone as well as Starr that I have offended. I did not mean to. I am very confused how a forum with such high standards and absolutely no allowance for swearing can think certain things said over time as fine. When you said to me Starr "do you want to fool around" I understand that you were being funny. But to some people this is not only not funny but devestating considering the lives they have led. Words are very powerful.Words can do great and awesome things, they can also break the heart and destroy.
Again, I apologize and will not mention this or allude to it again.
Thank you Weeping and Emily for your counsel. I couldn't have come to a proper decision I am sure at the moment without your kind and rational input.
Scher, your advice is right and I will take it. And happy birthday dear girl.

Since this thread has outlived its purpose, I will close it now.

I would like to thank everyone for their contributions and I hope everyone will take something to think about with them from all the comments that have been made.

And sometimes it is best to try to resolve any possible personal misunderstandings in PMs, without getting too many people involved.
