Happy New Year to all. With that I want to paste for your reading pleasure the lyrics to the Ode To Joy movement from Beethoven's 9th Symphony. It is the finest wish for universal brotherhood. [And to the feminists out there, it implies sisterhood too].
Lyrics in English for "Ode to Joy"
("Ode An Die Freude")
Beethoven's 9th Symphony
O friends, no more these sounds!
Let us sing more cheerful songs,
more full of joy!
Joy, bright spark of divinity,
Daughter of Elysium,
Fire-inspired we tread
Thy sanctuary.
Thy magic power re-unites
All that custom has divided,
All men become brothers
Under the sway of thy gentle wings.
Whoever has created
An abiding friendship,
Or has won
A true and loving wife,
All who can call at least one soul theirs,
Join in our song of praise;
But any who cannot must creep tearfully
Away from our circle.
All creatures drink of joy
At nature's breast.
Just and unjust
Alike taste of her gift;
She gave us kisses and the fruit of the vine,
A tried friend to the end.
Even the worm can feel contentment,
And the cherub stands before God!
Gladly, like the heavenly bodies
Which He set on their courses
Through the splendor of the firmament;
Thus, brothers, you should run your race,
As a hero going to conquest.
You millions, I embrace you.
This kiss is for all the world!
Brothers, above the starry canopy
There must dwell a loving Father.
Do you fall in worship, you millions?
World, do you know your creator?
Seek him in the heavens;
Above the stars must He dwell.

Nice Poem there Virgil!
Oh I didn't write it. If you get the chance, listen to Beethoven's Nineth Symphony. It's fabulous. I think I'll pull it out and play it here now. Too bad you can't listen in.

Happy New Year! :D :banana:
I want to hear how everyone spent their evening. I worked until four o'clock yesterday, then walked to the grocery store and spent a ridiculous amount of money (for me) on party food for my boyfriend and myself (veggies, and cheese and crackers and sausage, and veggie nori rolls, and dried fruit, and some tonic water). I lugged it back home, took a shower, put out the food, and the two of us spent the evening by watching Rosencrantz and Gildenstern are Dead and the Hamlet episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. I also invented a drink I named "paint water," because it looked exactly like the water you rinse paint brushes in. But it was really tasty. Then just before midnight we logged on to the internet and watched the clock change on the Official U.S. Time Clock (http://www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Eastern/d/-5/java). At exactly 12:01 my father called to wish me a happy New Year, and then I went to bed, because I was very tired. This morning the boy and I made pancakes, and this evening we're going to go see "Syriana." All in all, a wholey pleasant beginning to 2006. :)

My wife and I spent the evening at her mother's house. Not too much alcohol, just little red wine. Her brother and his new girl friend were there. He's separated from his wife and a divorce is immanent. The highlight of the evening was that at about a minute after twelve, my brother-in-law's wife calls. I don't know what they said, but he slammed the phone shut and came back red and angry. Oh, life.

How boring -- except for the paint water.
(You know I'm just teasing you, so don't fly off the handle. I love Mystery Science 3000 and your evening sounds pleasingly domestic.)
