Great thought for a thread. I'll just limit it to pop/rock songs. Here's some off the top of my head and I'll limit it to one per artist:

Jumping Jack Flash - RollingStones
Who Are You - The Who
A Day in the Life - Beatles
Kashmir - Led Zeplin
Time - Pink Floyd
Black Magic Woman - Santana
London Calling - TheClash
Sharp Dressed Man - ZZ Top
Night Moves - Bob Seger
Take It Easy - The Eagles

Extremely difficult to decide.

Probably:

Complicated - Avril Lavigne

Nobody's Home - Avril Lavigne

Ska8er Boy - Avril Lavigne

Here with me - Michelle Branch

Mocking Bird - Eminem

8 Miles - Eminem

In The End - Linkin Park

She Will Be Loved - Maroon 5

Everything Burns - Ben Moody

Bang Bang - Scher

(I can't think of some names right now...)

In no particular order:

Kiss From A Rose -- Seal
Life in the Fast Lane -- Eagles
Scenes From an Italian Restaurant -- Billy Joel
The Sad Café -- Eagles
American Pie -- Don McLean
I'd Really Love to See You Tonight -- England Dan and John Ford Coley
Holding Out For A Hero -- Bonnie Tyler
Glory of Love -- Peter Cetera
Power of Love -- Huey Lewis and the News
Still the One -- Orleans

I'll probably be back with addendums and amendments, but those are what's off the top of my head.

This is entirely undoable. I can hardly name 50 favourite songs, much less 10, and that's ignoring the fact that these things change all the time.

Nevertheless, to be fair, I'll post my favourite ones from U2's repertoire. In no particular order (talk about lack of commitment):

One
So cruel
Pride (in the name of love)
Stay (faraway so close!)
Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, killl me
With or without you
Staring at the sun
I will follow
Sunday bloody sunday
Trying to throw your arms around the world

They'll be gracing us with their presence in March, and they're even bringing Franz Ferdinand along (got my ticket already). What a great band.

Monica, I believe the Police's song you're referring to is Every breath you take.

Let's see:

Mysterious Ways - U2
Hotel Yorba - The White Stripes
For Whom the Bells Tolls - Metallica
Can't Explain - The Scorpians remake of The Who's hit
Redemption Song - Bob Marley
Move Over - Janis Joplin
I don't care if the sun don't shine - Patti Page
You Are - Lionel Richie
Doesn't remind me - Audioslave
Party at ground zero - Fishbone

wow, that list went fast and I surprised myself that more hard rock favorites aren't on the list...

My list is very fluid, depending on my mood and what bands I've been listening to lately and I'm not going to put any Floyd in there because it would be too hard to pick my favorites amoung their cataloge but to the person who picked Great Gig in the Sky, that is, indeed, an awesome song.
