Past cleaning

Is there a lamp somewhere?
I need its light.
Please pass me a duster too!
I need to clean out the past
There is so much clutter

It’s so dark here among
So many forgotten lives
So many parts I have played
The costumes lie dishevelled
On the floor among the dust

I trip over happy times
Scratch my legs on less happy
The dust brings tears to me eyes
I struggle to pull back the curtain
There is a window here?

Mom your smile so reassuring
Dad please don’t tell me so
I know, I know, so much work
So much left still to do
Is there too much for me all alone?

I have got to clean out the past
Don’t know if I have time to sort it?
A box for this and a box for that
What shall the labels say?
Will I remember to read them?

I have so much to do now
The present beckons, tasks are waiting
The future is impatient to arrive
Demands are a heavy burden
They get heavier and heavier.

Please pass me a lamp
I need to see the way forward
The curtain has closed and
My work is not yet finished
I need the light to go on!
