MW....i have started to read 1984 in my english class, i am about halfway through and i am a little surprized at orwell's predictions. many of them are pretty accurate. Survallence with the telesreens is one of the major predictions of the novel. i also think he is correct atleast a little on this topic. we are being watched most of time we are in public, it may be cameras, police/guards and the government being able to tap phone lines & watch internet usage. i know i wouldn't want the government listening on my private phone calls, and what i do on the internet. i don't think it will ever get as severe as it does in 1984 though. one prediction i think he is wrong on is the thought police, big brother controlling emotions of the party members. i don't think the government will ever have enough power to stop people from protesting, stating their opions, etc. atleast in the USA. having opions and giving your on ideas is what makes democracy so great, that is why it is so important to vote.

Do you know who you are voting for? Sometimes freedom of choice can be an illusion of democracy. Ponder that a while.

i think that it will get so bad some day that the goverment will be able to know if we run a stop sign and i dont think any one wants it to be like that be it is going to get like because of all the techgoloy we have now and kids are alot smarer with computers so i think we will have to have all this or we all will be killed

I think that you are right for the most part. I agree that we are constanlty watched in stores, streets, gas sations, everywhere. But I think maybe one day the government can control our feelings out of fear. Someone may not express themselves in fear of being killed or "vaporized". Most people value their lives and may not want to die for such a cause, but of course there is always radicals that would die 1 million times for a cause, but I think normal people could be controlled out of fear for their lives. I am not saying that a couple years from now we will be like this, but I believe it is possible even in the USA.

we have not worry until the purpos of servelance switches from benefit of society to the benefit of the governemnt... but anyone could make an argument about benefit of the government now, I rele dont think servelence is giving power to the government yet.

I have been reading 1984 in my inglish class and you are so right. I think Orwell has made some predictions that are pretty acurate. and he has hit some key points in socioty. In eaxample the roles of men and women changeing. And how we are being spied on by the goverment and the patriot act. So I agree with you and you are so right.

Orwells pridicions are very correct in most parts. I do think, as we go more and more into advanced tech. years that the gov't is watching us more and more. I dont think though the the gov't is gonna get to the point where they control our thoughts and feelings w/ fear! Our country, and you gotta admit, everyones NOT gonna agree on one thing, think the same for one thing, anything of that sort. There are too many different groups to have everyone one day be controlled by one person and make us all the same like Winston and Julia in 1984. Everything else that Winston perdicted though is almost right on the ball.

I believe that Orwells predictions are very accurate. We are under survallence all the time, but i also belive in some number of years the government will have so much controll, and people will follow the government because they are scared for their lives as said by others.

Well Teacher, for your info, once upon a time, there was a government with enough power to prevent protests, voicing of opinions, and freedom of speech. If you disagreed with the party, you were promptly executed, and there were thought police.
I'm not saying which one it is, but I will tell you one thing.
20,000,000 people died due to this regime. none in combat. all because they disagreed with the ruling party.
PS: Think 1927-1948
PPS: It also happened earlier than that. think 1524-1918

I Agree with Teacher in airports, school buses, school, malls, restraunts we are being watched and I think Orwell predicted this very well. Orwell also predicted many other things very well like the lottery and gin which is what is important to many people today. Orwell makes many good predictions through out the book in my opinion.

Actually, gin and the lottery existed long before Orwell.
And that some of the things seem to have come to pass shouldn't mean those things are labelled as predictions, because Orwell wasn't trying to predict the future, he was warning us against totalitarianism.

As The Atheist said, no predictions are being made. This is a warning or a novel of precaution at what could happen if technology and a more influential ruler were combined.

George Orwell could easily make these predictions based on the history of our world. History does repeat itself for the most part the only thing he changed was to the extent these predictions would be held. I believe his Predictions in 1984 are just as accurate for now as when it was actually 1984 and will be even more correct come 2024.

I think that surveillance will definitely move forward with technology. Look at what is being done with spy satellites, and other remote surveillance technologies. That is one of the costs of a more integrated, global society, the loss of privacy.

I also agree because we are being watched at all times. Also we're not watching everyone, the same way as Big Brother is not watching the proles. We are watching other people more carefully like the inner party
I would say that the teenagers and early 20's are like the inner party because they are the people most watched in our society. They are watched more closely because they are more of a threat, because they are usualy stronger and somethimes smarter, and those together make a very threatful weapon if you use them both together correctly. The proles i think are the younger and older aged people because they are least watched. Why are they least watched? Because they are not as much of a threat as people who are more capable of doing something. Think about it if your too young your too weak and less smart, but if you too old yes you are smart, but you are not as strong as you were when you were younger.

Though Orwell did not write this book as a prediction. This book was written as a caution against totalitarianism. He was cautioning us that with increasing technology and more influential rulers that a totalitarianist government could be devastating and could be unstoppable.
