View Full Version : Remembering Jakobin

Yesterday, we received the following news about Jakobin:
Hello,
My name is Lisa, I am Jack's girlfriend.
I am writing this to you to inform you of some sad news. Last week, Jack, or as he is known here as 'jakobin' was found dead in his car on the side of State Highway 1 here in New Zealand.
He had told me that he had found a new online forum, and had been enjoying it a lot.
I am sorry to have had to bring this news to you so close to Christmas, but he would have wanted you all to know the reason for his extended absence.
I hope that Jack's memory will live on, and that people will not quickly forget his short but great influence on the lives of those he knew and loved.
LisaJakobin has been an active and well-liked member of the Forum during the short period of time he spent with us and I pass the news of his sudden and untimely death with a very heart.
Please keep him and his family in your prayers and in thoughts.
Scher
I can't believe it... I'd like you to say it's a joke, but it doesn't seem to be....(unless it's a joke from who wrote that mail, but then why....)
In another forum I visit, we had been wondering what happens when someone who has an internet life dies...do the other forumers know?
It's so sad... I don't want to believe this... He was so fun and active even if he had just joined...

You know, that thought crossed my mind just yesterday.
Such sad news. He was here mostly before my time, so I didn't know him.
As John Donne said, "every man's death diminishes me."

oh my God,
I did not see this and just posted to him. I am so grieved I cannot bear it.
I don't get how she knew his password unless he told her. I wish this was not true.
With all my heart.

I'm numb with shock. Usually I can write a farewell poem, but this is just unthinkable. Gone but never forgotten, everyone is with me on this, right? Never forgotten. I don't know what else to say at the moment.

Wh-what?? Jakobin's gone...? It can't be...can it?
A 21-arrow salute seems appropriate here...he will be sorely missed. In pace requiescat!!!
I still don't know whether to believe it or not... But just thinking it might be true is quite upsetting...
and I dont think Scher would put up news that dont seem true...and who would do such joke? And why? To get attention? But also, would a girlfriend's first thought be to warn a forum? so soon? I can understand in like one week, when things are calmer... Or is it all just to weird that we want to refuse to believe???

How awful.:(
I don't know what to say and I can't write poems so I'd like Christina Rosetti's poem to say it in my stead:
Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
This is terrible! I really enjoyed having Jakobin around! His family and friends will be in my prayers. He will be sorely missed.

If it's true, it's horrible and sad (obviously). But I'm sorry to say I remain dubious. I agree with Night and Koa; it's highly suspect that, amid all the other confusion and responsibilities that come with dealing with the recently-deceased, one of a girlfriend's first actions would be to contact an internet forum. I mean, I know the actions of the berieved can be irrational, but... I'm thinking Jakobin wrote the note.

I have been thinking something like that all day. I am torn. I hope if he is alive he is well and this was not some horrible cry for help. I wish we could find out.
Any thoughts?

If this is a joke...it is not in the least bit funny. If it is not a joke.........we do deeply grieve....
Life is too short. For all of us. Diminished by the loss of a fellow we are lessened in sudden manners. It is the suddenness that startles, the quick loss most painful.
The first stage of grief is denial. I hope this thread and its' notice are just poor taste.
If it be true, our loss is great and i am truly saddened. Carpe Deim friends...hug someone you love.

No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.
-- John Donne, Meditation XVII
I searched on the new zealand herald, but found no death notices for a Jack describing what little we know about Jakobin. Until proven otherwise I will accept the loss of Jakobin. My heart goes out to his loved ones.
Lisa.

Dear all,
I am amazed that you all think that this is a joke or a con. I can assure you all that it is most certainly not that.
To answer several of your queries, the reason I came to the forum to tell you all what happened is because Jack had told me that he had been very active here lately, and I'm sure that he would have wanted you all to know what had happened.
His computer automatically signed on to this forum when he went onto the internet, and this is how I wrote the notice that you see above.
About not having a license or a car, he was driving his parents car, and he was indeed driving without a license. He ofcourse would not have thought that anything would happen, so he did not even get a chance to say goodbye to anyone he loved.
I hope that you can all put any doubts behing you, and please think about your lives and the way you live them, because you never know which day will be your last.
I would like to thank Scheherazade for starting this thread remembering Jack.
I urge you all not to look for any media surrounding the accident, as Jack's family wished it not to be made publically available, because of the shock of it to the family. I am sorry that there is not more 'proof' that it happened, but I hope that my word, and the word of love can convince you that this did indeed happen, and that it is very real, and that we all need to come to accept these things.
Thank you for your kind words to Jack. If you would like to ask me anything at all, just send me a message, and I will attempt to answer you as soon as possible.
Jack's funeral is tomorrow, I shall put in a word for Jack's 'anonymous' friends.
Lisa.

God I can't believe something like this happened... I didn't know Jakobin so good but I read his posts here and I was shocked to read the news. I just cannot believe this....it is so sad and I am feeling very bad right now as if I could cry. I hate receving this kind of news...it is so weird and sad to find out that someone we talked to some days ago is not among us anymore...

It is a poor thing, but it is personal, and written from the heart. I am no where near the greatest poet in the world, but my friend will get a send off from me. I still find it hard to believe him gone....
Lament for Jakobin
Roads go ever, ever on.
Middle Earth once bloomed in the beauty of New Zealand.
Jakobin loved them both very dearly
His homeland and that fantasy kingdom.
Roads go ever, ever on.
He heard the call; he had to go
By a path that we cannot follow until we’re called.
But, it hurts, for we shall miss him so.
Roads go ever, ever on.
Jakobin has passed down it out of sight.
But his memory must never fade;
We must keep it polished, and shining bright.
Over New Zealand a new star shines down.
As we trust that our friend, unforgotten, still looks around.

That was beautiful Pendragon, that was the perfect farewell poem for our friend. Thank you.

I'm shocked. I hope he is given a gracious send off. Death can be harsh at times, especially when it affects the young. Jack being only 18.

A proper sonnet, Pendragon, and a proper send-off.Thanks guys. It wasn't the beautiful poetry that Jay graciously chose for our friend's passing, I could never match a Christina Rosetti poem, and Jay, it was so fitting and lovely. But I couldn't let him go without a personal poem. The tears came last night as I wrote the words, but I trust he would not want us to be overcome with sadness, but remember the laughter and the good times. Perhaps we should make some reward or something to be given each year to one of our posters in the name and memory of Jakobin. How does that sound for a memorial? http://www.smileyville.net/aiwand/pioneer.gif

I agree. For next year's Member awards, we should have something in his honor.

I think that's a wonderful idea! That would be quite appropriate, as he was so involved in these first awards.

I am sorry if he died, although still I am not sure what to think...perhaps its joke but if it is a joke, its really very silly one.
He had been a very active member and it really feels strange and depressing when members from forum dies.

I would like to thank Pendragon for the lovely poem that describes Jack's love of Lord of The Rings and especially of New Zealand. If only he was here to read all your kind words. We shall all miss him dearly.
I wish that I knew you all better so that I could thank you personally for your friendship and kindness to Jack when he was still with us.
As for the memorial award, I personally think it is a great idea.
Thank you all again for your kind words.

I wish Lisa,
that you would honor us with a real picture of Jack that we could save and have in his memory. It would mean so much.
Lisa.
12-21-2005, 04:07 AM
I wouldn't want to do such a thing without the agreement of his family. I will ask them as soon as I can but I feel that I am not the one to decide whether his picture is displayed on the internet.
I think that his internet person and his real life person are completely different, and therefore, I think that putting a picture would not be right. Although, I will ask his family, and if they give their consent, I will do so.
rachel
12-21-2005, 01:25 PM
well of course, I wasn't assuming you would do it without permission. But you unlike us have the means to find out if this is possible and then do it/we could put it beside the member of the year award heading perhaps. It seems to me , having gone thru this sort of thing a lot in my life, that to actually behold the face of one having died it gives a better closure. But if it is not possible we will understand. Please do try though.
thank you.

*And Pentragon, I think it was really thoughtful of you to compose a beautiful poem in his memory.Well done!

Crisaor, Scher said it was not so much "banning" as just de-activating his account, out of respect. At least, that's what I think she meant?

Where did she said it? I don't see anything regarding that in her post in this thread. And what's respectful about banning an account? Is Abdo (to name an example, or Blade) being respected right now? If Jakobin was meant to be remembered, I'm sure there's something much more adequate to put in his title other than "banned". And it would be more informative to those not familiarized with the situation.
Also, is Scheherezade able to ban users?
RobinHood3000
12-24-2005, 04:59 PM
I think it's in the "Do Not Swear" thread--don't ask me why. And the reason his account has been de-activated is because he has recently and tragically shuffled from this mortal coil, as this thread attests. As for his title, I doubt if Scher or any other Moderator has control over that aspect of his profile.
Besides, this entire thread is in his memory, as may a Jakobin Memorial Award eventually. It isn't as if we are trampling on his grave by retiring his account.

12-24-2005, 05:37 PM
crisoar, Scher is a mod here :) There are a number of reasons why jakobin's account was `banned' which I am not going to go into here, but mainly because it will not be used anymore, Lisa had her own account opened.
Oh and yes Robin, "banned" is the default setting for an account which is closed.

Life isn't fair or unfair... as my past sig said. One simple second changed can change the world in seconds. It's the delicacy of life. A friend lost but remembered, the life that could've been, the life that shall be, the inevitable future to come, the unchangable past, the delicate present. Things we are forced to accept. No man deserves to die young. May he rest in peace.
Virgil

No man deserves to die young.
Unfortunately no man deserves to die old either. We'll have to hope for an after life. Then we could do this forum face to face with all of us.

yeah, your right... no man deserves to die, period.
emily655321
01-02-2006, 10:25 AM
Well, if you want to get technical, everyone deserves to die. Especially if there's an afterlife waiting to greet him. Or, as I'm inclined to believe, deserving has nothing to do with it. Everyone will die, regardless of who they are or what they may or may not deserve. But what every man does deserve is to die with dignity, and I think it is a suitably dignified memorial that Jakobin should have friends across the globe paying their respects to him here.
