In the book, Animal Farm, Squealer always reffers to the animals as comrades. (quote from 1984) "It's nothing," she repeated shortly. "I only gave my wrist a bit of a bang. Thanks, comrade!-

My question is, why does Orwell, usually have his characters referring to themselves as comrade?

I would have to agree, Orwell seems "Comrade" happy!

Big brother is trying to unite people through hatred...so he calls everyone comrade so they can think that they are all "friends"...and eventualy everyone will hate the same thing and they will show comradory (without showing emotions...they just wont hate eachother)

he uses the phrase comrade all the time in his books because Orwell is trying to tell us that communism is a very strong government and spreads easily but eventual will fall due to the lower classes up rising or the other contries taking over with military power. bt he uses comrade to remind you that he is basing the country on a communist government

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU GUYS FIGURE IT OUT

Ya i think he does use "comrade" to unite people against the same "evil" but i think Orwell is trying to make a point that Big Brother is trying to direct all the attention from itself so the people don't find the mistakes that the gov't is doing. If the people found out, everything would unscramble and everyone would revolt against Big Brother and it would fall. Big Brother is too smart, thats why it is keeping the people it rules "stupid". If no one knows what its doing then no one can make an argument.

He uses "comrade" because he is discussing communism in both Animal Farm and 1984; "Comrade" is a term used by communists. It's a unity thing. So Orwell is just staying true to the government he's designed for his novels.
