In 1984 the first part of the novel shows lack of any emoition or Individuality. I mean why couldnt they just be who they are and stop being something someone else "Big Brother" Wants them to be? Is it because they are scared for living life in there own personal personailities and life? Or is it the fact that they dont know how to react to Big Brother and are afriad of him? I just dont understand why they would want to still be alive if they can't be them self i mean the whole point of life is to be who you are and not what others want you to be isnt it? Well I just think they should stand up to big brother and be themselfs be who they want to be. I also can't imagine being on telescreens 24/7 and not be able to have a life with out someone knowing everything about you or being able to have a personal life or being able to do things with out everybody wondering what your doing. I mean its like your being watched every where you go, Yeah that is how it is today for example being on the bus and in stores,Gas stations, School, Any sport event even traveling down the road no matter what your always under some camera. But there is a place and time and you still have a personal life at home where your not on any type of secerity or on camera because you are in your own home and you can be yourself and have your own privacy. I just cant imagine being on camera even in your own home its too crazy but well this book i think relates soo much to the world to day its incrediable. Well i guess if anyone agrees or can help me out it would be greatfully apperciated.

What you obviously do not understand about this book is that it is written in 1948, and it is taking a look at what could happen in the future. In my opinion, it has become very correct, and that is the scary thing. Everyone is the same because BigBrother is making them conform. They cannot breakfree, or they will be vaporized. The reason why it lacks emotion is because in the future there will be no emotion. If you understand anything in this book, understand that it was basically a prophecy for the future. think about it. Everywhere has cameras now. people are evn installing them into their homes, and the government can now tap into their systems. Everyone is becoming the same with the breaking down of cultures and religions through television, and we are becoming one big culture. Everyone is losing their emotion. we all know that that is very true. we see people dying all the time on television. do we feel sad? no. We hear about children dying in Darfur, do we cry? no. People are going away to die, much like in the book where a massive war is waging outside of these walls, and no one cries for the dead, because the dead are unknown. They do not even know that there is a war raging outside of their houses.
I hope that answers your questions. It is a text exploring the extremes of society.

ray.....yes, i agree with Brena we are slowly losing any and all emotion in your society. we should be carefull of that now b/c we can see it happen now with the war we are in.
