I have just finished Part One of the novel, and I don't understand why the children are used as Big Brother's spies? What makes them want to watch something as brutal as a hanging? They're just little kids, they should want to run and play, not beat on the adults and watch hanging. :(

hello lil_bugalu. I think the children are used as Big Brother spies because children are very impressionable And violence became so regular to them that its part of there lives. It seems as though hangings and other violent things of this nature are like Sponge Bob to our modern day children.

I agreee with Curtis, the children were targeted to be spies because they are easily corrupted. If the Party had directed this job toward adults the adults would be smart enough not to turn each other in because they would realize they are the ones that have the power to set things right. I want to know why the proles don't gather and unite, I know they don't realize their strength but wouldn't they care about the people the Party are controlling? Or is it that they don't want to get involved because they think the Party will come after them next?

For an insight into why the mass of people are so willing to give up their freedom, read this excerpt from Dostoevsky's novel "The Brothers Karamazov":

I think the children are spies because they are easy ton minipulate. the children will do anything Big Brother says because they weant to be good and do as they are told.
