In the novel 1984 by George Orwell I don't understand why winston changes the truth and the past?In the novel he burns the papers in the memory hole. What i don't understand is why he lies.

Orwell is showing how much control the government has over people. They can make people do really dumb things and people (Winston) will do it just because if they do they wont get introuble with the law or something.. if he doesnt lie, Big Brother could send the police for him to take him away.

You are correct. The make him lie otherwise he could be in big trouble w/ the Big Brother. The reason why he lies though is because the Gov't doesn't want the people to know what has actually happened. The Gov't wants to keep them dumb and stupid. This goes w/ their slogan "Ignorance is Strengh". If the Gov't can control the people by lying to them and keeping them oblivious to what is going on...they are able to control them even more. This though could be a very bad thing, b/c if the people dont know what has acually occured, history could very much repeat itself.

Ethan.....Winston Has to lie because it is his job. If he doesn't do what he is told he is afraid that he will be vaporized. Big Brother will Know because the telescreen is always watching him and everyone else. The telescreen is the thing the government uses to watch people and if they do something wrong the government sends the thought police after them. If the person is guilty or somethin than he or she will be vaporized as well.
