Fofo, I think Pearl Buck's novels are very good for people who want to know Chinese culture although she was an American. She learned to speak Chinese before she could speak English and she had a very beautiful Chinese name "赛珍珠"。"赛"means surpass, and "珍珠"means pearl, as her first name. In China, four novels, The Dream of the Red Mansion, Journey to the West, The Romance of three Kingdoms, The Outlaws of the Marsh are generally ragarded as the top four classic novels ever written. But they are all too long, very very long. The novel I want to suggest you to read is The Ture Story of Ah Q. It depicts Chinese characters very accurately and profoundly, although these characters I , as a Chinese, don't like, even hate.
