Since so many members are apparently from outside the U.S., I wonder if they have access to see an American TV series I have come to love.
It's "The Gilmore Girls." It's supposedly a girly program and I realize I'm risking my reputation as a he-man to admit how much I enjoy it, but I can't help myself. Lauren Graham is the funniest, most endearing actress on television -- not to mention a very foxy lady who looks at least 10 years younger than her true age of 38. Her manic sarcastic humor keeps me in stitches every week. I end up watching some episodes twice to catch all of her rapid-fire hilarious remarks.
I learned Graham was born in Honolulu, which bolsters my theory that there must be something in the water supply here to produce so many beautiful women. In addition to Graham, Hawaii-born actresses include Megan Ward and Kelly Preston (John Travolta's wife) among a long list of gorgeous island girls who made a mark in Hollywood.
Any other guys like "The Gilmore Girls"?

Hi, my name is Papaya and I watch Gilmore Girls, sheesh I was keeping that a secret. I got hooked a while back by all the quirkiness. A dog named Paul Anka - now that's funny!
As you're wondering about out of the US, I dont think I've heard of that being played here...unless the title was changed, which is often the case...or unless I havent realised, but then it means noone is talking about that much (I dont watch tv much but I do hear of everything at some point...;))

Awwww, Starr. It's my most fav show of all time. And Jess (Milo Ventimiglia) is my dream boy . I hate it when Lorelai dated that teacher and almos. He's too conventional...
And it is from one of the episodes of this shows that I know about the book, Franny and Zooey-JD Salinger (when Jess came in to Rory's room secretly to return her bracelet and Mom caught him and he made excuse by saying that he was just checking whether Rory already have a copy of Franny and Zooey).
But they don't play it again here since last year :bawling:

If you can see the program, check out Lauren's long legs the next time you watch and she's wearing a dress instead of jeans. She's 5 feet 10 inches tall and I have always been crazy about tall gorgeous women.
Maybe her character's quirky humor doesn't translate well to foreign countries, but you keep your eyes on her legs and you'll want to form a club yourself.

I liked the episode where the lawyer talks Lorelai into dating him by reminding her of how much it would irritate her mother. She grins and says: "You suck." I squirted beer through my nose laughing so hard.

I haven't watched Gilmore Girls in such a long time. I used to like it at first...but then I got bored by it. I haven't yet found a non-anime show that can hold my attention for more than two seasons.
I liked the part of Gilmore Girls that I watched....

i like the first three seasons. the characters were still fresh, rory was decent, and the show had not become too typically WB-soap-operaish. i also have a preference for jess, who leaves after the third season, methinks. (the guy reads! that's a HUGE turn-on for me.) and then of course rory has to jump on the bandwagon, loses her virginity, does crap, and becomes one of those girls i never really like. so yeah, i don't watch gilmore girls anymore.
side note: i still think alexis bledel is cute. and that in real life she's going out with milo ventimiglia (the guy who plays jess) makes me happy. for some reason. :D

I've really come to dislike the Rory character, the rest of the cast keeps me watching though.
One of my favorites is when Ma Gilmore calls Lorelai and Lorelai says "Who is this?" and Ma Gilmore (I can't remember her name) replies "This is you in 20 years." I think of that every time I hear my Mom's words coming out of my mouth.

No, but there is a funny story connected to that fact.
A couple years ago I was seriously thinking about retiring in BA because the cost of living there was so cheap compared to Hawaii. To get the inside scoop on living in BA, I contacted my friend Eric, wrote dozens of emails to a group of American ex-patriates who had an online forum, and did a massive amount of research on the web.
Eventually, I changed my mind about retiring in BA, but I had all this information and I didn't want to waste it, so I wrote a short story ("At Home in the Antipodes") about an older American who lives in BA. The story got rave reviews from readers, but one in particular astounded me. A Porteno attending the University of Michigan emailed me to say that my story was the best description of life in BA he had ever read!

Gilmore Girls is one of my favourite tv shows. But they've only started showing it recently and it's still in its 2nd season here in India.
It's being telecasted here.

LOL why? We always seem to get things later than most European countries... we got the Chocolate Factory movie one month later than in Russia... ;)
I'll google this thing and find out if it is shown maybe on some pay-tv thingy...
*back after googling*
:rage:  :crash:
I HATE when this happens... I retreat everything I said, this show IS actually shown here and I know people who watch it though I've never tried myself.
What mislead me was this horrible habit of changing titles, which causes me this kind of mistakes all the time (people online talking of shows I think I dont know until I realise they just have been translated in a way that has nothing to do with the original): in fact, it's called "Una mamma per amica" (roughly translatable as "Mum as a friend" ), which made it kinda hard to guess

Why does Italian TV change the titles of American programs? Surely, "The Gilmore Girls" would be easy enough to translate into Italian. There might be some devious reason, like showing bootlegged copies. When I was in Costa Rica, every bar in San Jose showed bootlegged American movies and there were video shops everywhere selling them.
I have no clue why...Everyone younger than 50 knows the word 'girl' I think... so they could have left it as it was (after all Dawson's Creek is Dawson's Creek here too...) or just called translated it literally... But it normally happens to tons of movies and tv shows (it sometimes took me months to find out I did know some show some English speaking person was talking to me about....). If what you mean, starr, is 'pirate' unauthorized copies, I doubt that's a reason, our pirate industry works perfectly whatever the title is :D
I'd really like to find out why... Is some over-sweet mother-daughter relationship the main theme of this show? Cos that title alwyas made me think of that...

I wouldn't call the relationship over sweet, even though the mother and daughter are very close. To me what is so funny is how the daughter often acts like the parent. The mother goes off on flights of imagination and the daughter has to reel her in by constantly saying "Mom!" Lorelai (the mother) is intelligent and very funny herself, but she also has serious emotional issues which makes her vulnerable and endearing. From what I have read, Lauren Graham (the actress) puts a lot of her own personality into the role. I can't wait to see Graham star in a dramatic film because I think she is very talented (not to mention gorgeous.)
Well I guess that's pretty much what I had in my mind, though the emphasis on it on the Italian title is still kinda annoying I guess...

I basically don't watch TV(I could easily live a year without it as long as I had a neverending supply of books), but I use to love Gilmore Girls, when I was younger. It was about the only US show I watched.I very very rarely even watch TV, but I loved the first two seasons of this.Especially as I use to like Rory and Dean at the start, and then when Jess came. But here in Australia, they pulled the show(and this was after it kept on been shown infrequently), so here it only lasted up to where Rory just goes off to college(note: they showed this about a year after the US), and then, if I remember correctly, introduced this annoying guy and it soon ended. But I did happen to read online that there is about another one or two seasons that never probably will never air in Australia, and Rory loses her virginity to Dean and Jess disappears or something happens with him?Anyway, I still think Alexis Bledel is really cute, and I liked her character at the beginning as she was actually not another braindead bimbo character, and liked books etc.But when did Jess become the Romantic poet?I can't remember him even liking books or reading one at all! He's surely the exciting wild type of guy, but I see him more of a rebel without a cause, than a rebel with a cause.Jess is interesting but I only love(If I had to pick an ideal type of guy myself) the rebels with a cause. And I did think Dean treated Rory better at the beginning, and was lovely in that nice and sweet-decent guy kind of way.
The first season was probably the one I remember best, and the characters were all so fresh- I started watching it each week, till it was cancelled here.
Gilmore Girls is probably shown in Pakistan (or is available in DVD) but it sounds like one of these cheap, corny American sitcoms I usually wont touch with a ten-foot bargepole.

Gilmore Girls isn't really a sitcom but a drama-comedy (if there's such a thing). The show's pretty different than the usual stuff on TV...with fast-paced and witty dialogue.
I don't know how the show develops later though as the show's just into its 2nd season in India. But so far, I've enjoyed watching it.

Thanks for the link starrwriter! The only thing I was wondering, though, if this is in US currency? As we don't actually have Wal-Mart here in Australia, and this is a U.S site, so therefore do I just have to approximately double the price, considering the Australian dollar Vs the American dollar.I'll have to perform a current currency conversion, but my parents have always been funny about buying things online, I'll have to ask my mother first. She doesn't actually purchase things online and is wary of it-for saftey concerns etc.
Does anyone know any places in Australia where you can buy this? That is more likely for me right now...

I LOVE the Gilmore Girls...the show is excellent! Amazing!! wow...
I Think that Amy sherman palladino and her writers staff are just brilliant!
Great people... The monologs are very quick very fluent and most of all hilarious.. Yes i'll admit there are those scenes when it all gets " Mushy.."
but mainly the episodes are hypnotizing...
I would like to add that this show was one of the major boasts that drove my to sit my *** off and grab a book...
So Gilmore Girls i salute!.

Well, that oughta teach me to actually watch a show before commenting on its merits. Silly EAP.
I bought the first season DVD set because of extreme boredom and the absence of Yes Minister! from the movie store. (I prefer to believe the picture of Alexis Bledel on the cover had nothing to do with it)
At best I was expecting another O.C, a show you can watch once and then do your best to erase the memory of its existence from alongside DVD's like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Closer.
Instead what I got was a weird combination of 40's noir, Joss Whedon style slapstick and dialogue coupled with the emotional intensity and social commentary of Dawson Creek-that-could-have-been.
Seriously, it's probably the best American show running on T.V. The only recent shows that come close to it in script quality are Buffy The Vampire Slayer and the criminally under-rated Carnivale. Witty dialogue, brilliant acting, clever cinematography and the tendency of the script-writers to toss in a myriad obscure references ranging from boxing quips to Proustisms makes the show a joy to watch. The Gilmore Girls have amazing screen chemistry. Rory and Loralai (heh - but that's another story and not for the PG-hearted) grew into their roles throughout the first season and I felt the coming of age of not only Rory but Loralai was very skillfully handled by the scriptwriters.
All the Gilmore Girls are extremely feisty and fun to follow; from the acid-cold, old-fashioned decadence of Gran'ma Loralai Gilmore to Grandmother Gilmore's turmoil-filled existence, Loralai's unwavering optimism, smart-*** conditioning and her relationship with Rory, who in turn seem to combine all the strengths and none of the weaknesses (well so far) in her character.
They are so dominant that we momentarily forget the male leads, who in themselves run the whole gamut from the bumbling jock to the staid cafe-owner; the intellectual-in-touch-with-his feminine-side school-teacher, a teen looking for love and acceptance, the grandfather who didn't quite knew how to be a father - none of them felt like filler characters and added to the show something unique of their own.
Even though I don't agree with a lot of values this show tries to promote, they are never pushed on the viewer or presented in any distasteful manner whatsoever. (The Donna Reed episode is a good case in point) The writers never forget that the primary purpose is to entertain which works well for all involved.
Looking forward towards watching the remaining seasons. Those of you who follow it, has it jumped the shark yet? If so, in which seasoned do you reckon was the zenith achieved?
