Any classical music aficionados out there that can recommend a particular composer, symphony, piano set, etc? I love the music, but can't find any moving pieces on my own. Thanks.

Brahms (symphonies)
Wagner (if you can find opera without words)
Dvorak (ANYTHING)
Smetana (Ma Vlast)
Liszt
Chopin (piano pieces)
Debussy (just about anything)
R. Strauss (tone poems)

All of these are good for background music or for serious listening.

Hungarian Dances by Brahms are also very nice :)
in addition: Prokofjev and Rohmaninov...i might be wrong with spelling. but you got the idea....they are famous enough.
Vivaldi - 4 seasons i guess is the most widely known piece.

'Adagio for Strings' -- Samuel Barber (it's not 'classical', but then, neither are 80% of the composers listed on this thread).

Anything by Michael Nyman.

I can't beleive no one has mentioned Rachmaninov! Variations on a theme by Paganini is my absolute favorite! Mendolson is another good composer.

Once again, thanks for all of the recommendations. Right now, I'm listening to "Planets" by Gustav Holst. In one word, it's brilliant. I'm fascinated as to how these people came up with such beautiful pieces of music.

Sometimes people being compelled to point out the obvious come off as obnoxious.

[It wasn't you, Rotty, it was me.]

Sometimes people have pointed out stupid (and pretentious) details after I'd posted comments on other threads. So my remarks were not meant to be offensive, they were purely pre-emptive. I apologize if that rubs some people the wrong way.

Actually Abdo you're not the only person around here on this forum (or others I'm on for that matter) who I've seen post the obvious to someone else in a slightly less than kind way. My point? Nothing. Nevermind. Smileys do indeed help sometimes to prevent misunderstandings too. `Newbies' don't always get it right about posting in the proper forum or topic, and sometimes posts get missed, that's all. Anybody can take that comment any way they wish.

I am quite happy because I made a discovery today: my state has an AM radio station that is ALL classical music. I've got it playing right now, and I'm just plain old happy. Thank goodness for radio. :P

i love bach and mozart. i think beethoven's overrated, but i don't really listen to classical music so much as play it. ( if a piece is hard, it sounds crap because i play it all out of time). chopin's alright, sounds good played properly, sounds bad not played properly. but, BACH AND MOZART. seriously.

I would really recommend Beethoven, symphony nr 9. "Ode to Joy". The way the pieces of it build up to the final chorus is fantastic and really a joy to listen to. A masterpice about how joy brings mankind together.

Syrinx and Clair de lune by Debussy are also favorites of mine. Listen to Clair de lune in moonlight if oy get the chance. It gives peace of mind. Have a good time.

Many are not 'classical' as opposed to 'romantic', but they are 'classical' as opposed to 'popular'.
