Kerry, Compare his ideas in "Shooting an Elephant" to those in "1984" or "Animal Farm" for that matter. From social idealist to total pessimism. His mature realism as to the potenial of human cruelty and quest for control over other human beings. The perfection of the oppressive mechanisms in society. These are some of the issues that strike me as relevant. His experiences as a young policeman in Burma, through his disillusion of Soviet communism during his involvement with the Spanish Revolution, his witnessing of the horrors of WWII, the rise of Stalinism, the horrors of the Holocaust...these life experiences seem to logically contribute to his evolution to writing 1984. Possibly a theme might emerge for you along these lines that would intrigue you. Good luck in your studies. Ted

Question is, do you have a theme yet? It's always good to start with the theme that you have chosen and try and think of a title that would sum it up in the most creative way without getting complicated or gaudy. Tell us your theme and then perhaps we can suggest something, or give us a few options for titles along with your theme and we can help you narrow your options down.

I don't think Orwell was a total pessimist. He wrote 1984 and Animal Farm to show how horrible society could get. A total pessimist wouldn't have bothered to write such books. He would simply accept the situation as inevitable and try to avoid becoming a victim himself. Despite his disillusionment with the Soviet Union and the Holocaust, Orwell retained some of his idealism to the end.
