Addition to the voting system.

It has been brought up that other awards should be made aswell as just Member of The Year. What follows are the additional awards:

• Wittiest Poster
• Best Avatar
• Best Newbie-welcomer
• Best Sig
• Wackiest member

If you could put your vote through for these too, and we will, in time, announce the winner of all the different awards.

Just a quick note, if you wish to change your vote, then just edit your previous voting post, as this will make counting much easier when we come to the end of the first stage of voting.

Thanx!

Happy Voting!!

I think as this thread was opened later the closing day for nominations will be the 7th of December!
Well unless jakobin comes back and has his own plans

Maybe the categories aren't a popular idea but here are mine so far:

Wittiest Poster's - B-Mental - Nightshade - Stanislaw

Best Newbie-welcomer - Sanmercury who's so sweet.

Wackiest member - Bongitybongbong and can I nominate Stanislaw again? They're both so much fun and their ideas so original.

Best Avi & Sig I've no idea as there are so many.

Anyone know where jakobin's off to?

Gee, starrwriter you're more of a newbie than me! :) I think you have to be here a little while before you can be nominated - maybe next year, eh?

bonjour, i am back.

this thread was indeed opened abit later, but there was all the opportunity in the world for people to vote, so i dont think that it should be extended and it will also close on the 31st of November so people will have to be quick with their nominations in this thread. sorry about that, but i think that i will just be too busy around the end of November and the start of December. sorry bout that guys.

Best Avatar : Mono. (Because I'm a fan of silent movies, I guess. I think the style of imagery is just so lovely, and that avy captures it perfectly. Also, the photographic composition is flawless, and I love the cherry blossoms. :))

Much. Thanks, Darlin.
I would vote for my favorite name to be ....drum roll please.....DARLIN!
I always laugh when I see someone write "Goodnight Darlin" or anything of the sort.
Stanislaw would be wittiest (sp?) poster. Aye ya gits me vote Cap'n so shiver me timbers boyo.
Best newbie welcomer would have to be the always sweet Samercury although SubT was a very close second.

Hey, B are you making fun of my name? ;) You know it's really Darlene so it sounds very much the same - quite lovely if I do say so myself. :D

Best Avatar - kittykittie - makes me smile every time I see it but if she's too much of a newbie I do love Mono's, it's so romantic. Cuteness nomination would go to Sub's, simply adorable. A lot of people keep changing their's so that makes it hard.

Could the fact that your name is "B-Mental" have anything to do with it? :p

We had awards similar to these on the PlanetAVP Forums, but it was a little easier to find nominees for the English Lit Award (essentially "Most Erudite) when half the posters used so-called "leet-speak" and other grammatical atrocities.

What is leet-speak? Never heard of it.

That's when you use numerals and non-alphanumeric symbols to translate something that would take 3 seconds to type into something that takes four times as long to type and twice as long to read.

Por ejemplo, the letter L becomes either |_ (upper-case) or 1 (lower case). The letter T becomes a 7, the letter K becomes a |<, etc...in other words, it's a convoluted and irrational attempt at creating a distinct geek-wannabe culture.

Leet-speak is most often used by annoying teenagers in chatrooms, true. However, it's origins and execution are slightly (and I do mean "slightly") more complex. There was some Microsoft code that a bunch of computery-types were trying to crack, back in the '90's, and they wanted to be able to communicate with other crackers, within the network, without "outsiders" being able to understand what they were talking about. So they spoke in English, but made the words as unintelligible as possible, through the substitution of numbers and symbols that, if you looked closely, resembled actual letters. But, if you weren't keeping your eye out for the secret language, it would look just like gibberish or code. Essentially, it's hacker-slang. The word "leet" (also spelled "1337") is derived from "elite;" according to legend, the self-description of the hacker who finally cracked the code.

A suitable definition of "leet":

. . . it was used in a sort of sub-text that is included in coding so that hackers who send lines of code to each other would know what it did while others would not.

. . .

n: a language originally created by computer hackers to communicate through their coding while others could not do such a thing. It misspells words that have been commonly misspelled in English, such as "Teh". It also spells most words phonetically, making it as easy to type in leet as possible. When a word ends in "X" or "cks", it is suitable to put an "orz" at the end. . . leet is also a very flexable language, so you can make your own words and modify the English language (teh smecks is a common substitute for sexy) in any way you see fit as long as it's close.

adj: superior; elite.

. . .

n: 1 |2 1337 (Direct translation: I r leet. English: I am elite.)
adj: That dude's so leet!

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=leet
Side-note, the term "woot" or "w00t," as common an expression today as "lol," originated in leet-speak.

jakobin

and do you have an explanation for the word w00t, or where it is derived from?

btw: just a quick note, this is all abit off topic...but yeah, whatever, no one is really caring about these awards anyway. not my problem...
