in 1984 it is said that at all times every state has one foe and one ally.
this situation is phisically impossible. either one of the states fights the other two at the same time or one of the states is at peace with both countries.
can someone explain me what and why?

However, it was also mentioned in the book that the wars were not actually real in the sense we normally think. War in 1984 is more of a way mutually used by all the countries to control their populations. If the wars were actually "fought" in terms of a normal definition, then the war(s) would eventually be over. As "Goldstein" mentions in his illegal book, the real war is being fought between the government and its people... without the people even knowing that it's the government.

Oceania says that it is at war with Eurasia, and allies with Eastasia. Eastasia says they are at war with Oceania and allies with Eurasia. Eurasia says they are at war with Eastasia and allies with Oceania.

But none of them are actually at war.

Don't forget that who they are at war with and who their allies are can change at a pin-drop, making it more evident that none of the countries are at war with each other.

Yes. This is evident, but look at the other side: that Goldstien wasn't real. So how do you know that what he "wrote" is true also?? It could be that they were instead all one large counry, as pointed out in another post that i read here...somewhere. The whole story could be turned upside down to prove what ever you belive. (lol)

I'm not playing the devil's advocate or anything.....

Things don't need to be real for people to believe them. In effect, you don't even need to have confirmation either way. Take the Bible. How many Catholics believe the bible is true through blind faith? A lot. Goldstein exists because the people in the book believe they do. Same thing with the wars. They exist because the masses believe in it. Truth is really only collective, popular belief. If you notice, truth is just what everyone believes. There is no real "truth", because truth can be manipulated based on who is in control of the truth. That's how Oceania is able to change allies and enemies so easily.

But none of them are actually at war.

There has to be a real war with someone in order to waste resources. Stuff needs to be made and then sent to the war to be blown up. Now the war may not be with anyone in particular but it needs to exist somewhere to use up stuff that's made. Part of the Parties main controling device is to keep everyone at a state of subsistance where there is no abbundance of anything but those same people need to work at factories and do things so the war is real enough to remove the surplus. Whether they are actually fighting the other places or just takeing it all to a giant dump and letting it rust as far as anyone needs to know the war is as real as the screens and their minds make it.
