View Full Version : Where would Poe publish?

In the search for possible outlets for my own writing, I started to wonder where some of the great writers of the past might publish their works today. It is easy to imagine Shakespeare writing screenplays, and, while his style would have to change a little to fit the times, his plays would readily fit into what is made into a movie today. Twain would have no trouble getting published by a variety of publishers. Most other authors of past times would readily be published today, but I can't think of any magazines that would touch all but a few of Poe's writings. A few of his stories would work in Horror magazines, and some might be picked up by humor magazines, but I can't think of any place that would touch "William Wilson" as one example, of "The Imp of the Perverse" for another, and other of his stories don't fall into any easy category. And where would one find a story with the phrase " the necromancy of female gracefulness" today.
I am wondering if there are any places where such literature is published today.
Interesting concept. I'm not really up to date with modern publishing, so I wouldn't be able to suggest anything. But I wonder how many magazines were inspired by Poe? They would obviously publish him now. But if he never existed, would they?
The New Yorker
Fantasy & Sci-Fi
New Horizions
Playboy

The New Yorker might publish a few of his stories, if he had a great track record, but they wouldn't touch most of his stories. Fantasy & Sci-Fi might be interested in one or two of his stories, but they wouldn't even read some of his best, "William Wilson" for example or "Devil in the Belfry". The same is true of Playboy; they would love some but not many.
New Horizions wouldn't be interested in anything that Poe wrote. Did you mean "Strange Horizions"? "Strange Horizions" might be interested in most of what Poe wrote.

Most of the magazines that would count Poe as an inspiration don't publish anything like what Poe wrote.
Yes, I meant 'Strange Horizions'. Sorry for the inconvinence.

No problem. I hadn't heard of Strange Horizons before, but I looked at it and think that it the best candidate for a place that would publish Poe, and me.
