View Full Version : A mead hall!
I guess this is the place for a thread like this... it's not really a game and I just wanted feedback from all kinds of people.
If I get the position I want, I'll be teaching Beowulf first, so I thought about incorporating it into an icebreaker for my classes. Historically, the people of Beowulf celebrated their victories at the mead hall and recounted their tales of victory whether past or present. Usually it was done in song by a Scop and elaborated on (hence the fantastic tale of Beowulf), but I thought why not do this in the classroom? I'll hang a sign that says "Heorot" (the name of the mead hall in Beowulf) during all the time that we work on it. For the icebreaker, I'll pass around refreshments (cookies and punch) and we'll go around talking about our victories.
We'll give it a try here; please, tell me what you think!
We are now in Heorot, grab your favorite food and drink (I've got oatmeal and tea) and tell us your victory! Don't be afraid to elaborate if you feel like it.
I'll start: I never thought I'd be able to play Pachelbel's Canon on my harp, but now I've even played for a wedding march!

*placing my tankard of ale on the table I take one last bite of the saukraute and bratwurst, and turn to my audiance, left eye twitches involentarily, the scar on my head seems to glisten...*
aye, the most firsome victory I had, was one o' the classics vengence, pain, and the like. I had been enjoyin a fine afternoon, when some landlubbers started harrasin my little sister, so I asked them what the problem was, and befor the answer struck my ears, my fist struck his nose. thus I vanquished mine foe, and what more, if ye buy me another ale, I'll tell ye another tale.
knew I could count on you Stan!

ok, I'll have myself a beer of whatever's on tap and perhaps a nice salami sandwich that magically appears from my favorite deli back in MI.
A coworker told my boss (she didn't bring it to me first) about something she found in my department that didn't make sense to her. I recieved a phone call from my boss and said coworker. I could tell my boss highly po'd with me when I picked up the phone, He explained that coworker was on the phone and he proceeded to tell me the problem. I was able to respond that I had already discussed the problem with my boss and reminded him why things didn't add up - he remembered the issue and quickly said hsi goodbyes and hung up with me. All I have to say to that coworker is "HA!!!" I have something else to say but this is an all ages bored.

This is neat! I can comment on all these victories through the poem!
My own, is not unlike the Scop who would learn and recite all 2796 lines of the poem.
Stan, you are Beowulf! Defending your sister like the hero defended the Spear-Danes!
Same for you Logos! your success is like Beowulf's resulting in his kingship.
Papaya, you're like Wiglaf who make the other men look worse when they wanted to desert their king.
Nightshade, want to go dragon hunting?

Cookies and punch and beer in a mead hall? What about some actual mead?
I love mead (honey wine to the unenlightened.) I have a recipe for cinnamon-flavored mead that will break your mouth, as they say here in Hawaii.
I first tasted mead at a Renaissance Fair in Marin County, California. It was sweet mead (as opposed to dry mead) and I drank enough of it to convince myself I had gone back in time as a court jester.
We've had a rash of disgusting pedofile teachers here locally, I don't want to be arrested for administering alcohol to minors! ;)
I'm brainstorming ideas for when I start teaching. I could do biscuits with butter and honey, but that might be too messy! :D

Non-alcoholic mead? If it isn't sold commercially, you could make some:
(1)Buy regular mead and boil it for 10 minutes to eliminate all the alcohol.
(2)Dissolve 3 cups of honey in a gallon of water and add cinnamon sticks to flavor.

It's not possible to eliminate allll the alcohol, but a goodly amount.

I beg to differ -- and I have decades of homebrewing experience to back me up. A 10-minute roiling boil will leave less alcohol than the miniscule amount found naturally in orange juice.

ok, I was being one of those know-it-all hair splitting science types. You're right it will get rid of most of the alcohol (but you still can't remove it completely - azeotropes).

I agree, but it's against the law to serve alcohol to minors. I bought a phony ID when I was 18.

hmmm.... most of my successes involve sport in some way. Probably the best was when I played as a goalie for my school football team and we won the district indoor championship without conceeding a goal.
btw I'll take some whisky and arran oatcakes.
I never thought to try and look for non-alcoholic mead. Thanks for the suggestion! If I can't find it I'll go with the Honey-water and cinnamon just to avoid any kind of controversy.

You did better than Beowulf in this one Kilt! Even he lost a man (goal) defending his "team" against Grendel.
