Can't remember the quote verbatim or where it came from

I know it is from fiction and i think the setting was a small town. The quote is something about being secretly in love with the person you brush past on the sidewalk every day. I thought it was from one of three places (willa cather, sherwood anderson or sinclair lewis) but haven't been able to find it... :brickwall

It sounds vaguely familiar and I've got a nagging suspicion that I've heard something like it in a film recently - whether it was a film of the original book, or whether the idea was just stolen (or even if it actually was in a film), I don't know.

If I remember where I came across it, I will post.
