Hi,
I have to do a paper containing 4 paragraphs, each with one type of criticism. These are: Formal, Social, Psychological, and Archetypal.
Formal is a judgement of whats in the book, you investigate the use of literary devices. Define the patterns of development as shaped by the form of the text. Example questions: How are the parts of this text related to its overall form? What are key parts of this text?(satire, events, images, words, ideas) and what is the meaning of them. What does this pattern suggest about the overall development of the text?
Social is the readers feelings about the text. Who is the authors implied audience? Motives for telling this story? Is the resolution just? How do you feel about the characters etc. Its the readers response.
Pshychological focuses on the author. What is the authors background? Whats was he influenced by? What desires is the text revealing? Symbolism? Condensation? Displacement?
Archetypal: Critics find patterns that are easily identifyable to people. How are the themes of this novel related to other works? What archetypes do you recognize? How are the characters/places of this novel similar to other works? What desires do i understand/recognize in this text?
I have a pretty weak base and i figured some of you here are litterary masters and orwell lovers so why not ask here =) If you have a quote that would be great also.
