Owing to popular demand (?), here's a link to my travel memoir of the banana port of Golfito, Costa Rica. The town is not exactly situated at the ends of the earth, but you can see it from there:

I don't mind as long as you send me $10.

Hello William Starr Moake
The site reminds me of my eccentric english teacher's blog, who also a dedicated traveller. He posted pictures and stories of them....long stories. Good pictures, esp the "Cruising up the Golfo Dulce on the jinxed panga" one

Eccentric -- yep, that's me. But the web page is no blog. It's a reprint of an article and photos I sold to a travel magazine. I was a freelance travel writer/photographer for several years. Freelance means I choose which places to write about as I traveled over half the world, then pitched the articles to a number of magazines at once to find a buyer.

Luck had nothing to do with it. It was a combination of writing and photography skills, persistence in dealing with travel magazine editors, and a high tolerance for travel hardships. I always hated the logistics of travel -- long airline flights, checking into and out of hotels, wild bus rides on bad roads with crazy bus drivers, trains that were slower than mules, etc. Getting there was a pain in the butt. Being there was good -- until I caught a dose of Deli Belly or Moctezuma's Revenge. Fortunately, I avoided catching malaria, dengue fever, chagas or one of the other deadly infectious diseases that was always breaking out in the destination country. Civil wars and terrorist bombings were fun unless I got too close to the action.
Many travel writers don't live normal lifespans. That's one reason why I quit.
