Hi! I was wondering what kind of music is enjoyed by the intellectual world.
I myself like Coldplay, Five for Fighting and The White Stripes, among others.

I haven't heard of any of those except for Coldplay, and I couldn't tell if I've ever heard any of their music. I listen mainly to blues, zydeco, and a little jazz. I could name some of my favorites, but 95% of the people might recognise 5% of the music I listen to.

radiohead
led z
pink floyd
the smiths
morrisey
the who
smashing pumpkins
stone roses
joy division
(many other british bands: muse, placebo, lightning seeds, suede, pulp, ect)
mostly rock and electronic...
my favourites:
depeche mode
the cure
then lots of random stuff, i occasionally take a listen to most of the things sub mentioned, of which i especially love the smiths and placebo
other stuff... uhm... garbage, the killers, new order, joy division, some muse and oasis but not too much these days... some U2 and some REM...
i especially like dark sounding music and depressive bitter lyrics :D
oh and i love the music of the 80s, even some of the mindless kind :D
i also have some stuff from Russia and Hungary, mostly electropop stuff, which is a kind of music I really love...
Nightwish, Within Temptation, Stratovarius, Avantasia, Inkubus Sukkubus, Evanescence, instrumental soundtracks, mostly anything rock/metal related, add interesting lyrics and I'm gonna like it.
I also like the 80s, (general) rock, alternative stuff, I'm known to like the occasional pop song, I also like celtic themes (sounds, genres whatever you wanna call it).
So to summarise it: anything that's got a rhythm and doesn't make me wanna turn deaf is ok.

Wow... how many people know Dream Theater? For those of you into prog rock and love talent, I highly recommend them.
Other things I listen to:
-anything and everything Jazzy,
Incubus,
James Taylor,
The Goo Goo dolls,
Santana,
Vivaldi,
John Butler Trio,
3 doors down,
Maroon 5,
Jimmy Eat World,
The beach boys,
Creed,
Debussy,
P.O.D.,
U2,
Alicia Keys,
Salvador,
......the list goes ever on and on!
I guess I'm quite eclectic! I think rap and techno are the only types I don't really like... nor the disturbing creaming stuff, though I can appreciate some of it, just cuz it does require some talent, I don't listen to it for pleasure.... but I like everything else.
I love it how a certain song brings back memories of a certain time in your life!!! That's my favorite part of music.
I always make myself a playlist of about 50 songs when I go on a trip; and listen to it all throughout the trip. Then whenever I'm feeling down back at home or, I'll play the songs again and remember the great times I had during the trip... even just a certain word in a certain song makes me remember a whole adventure!!!!
You guys should try it sometime! Very therapeutic!

I want to hear violins, I want to here the harp, I want to hear screaming metal, and funk and punk and jazz and blues( my fave) and electronic beats and independant releases and the guy on the corner butchering a Rolling Stones song and the child trying to master doremifasolatido and, and, and...........

So I guess there aren't any pop-lovers here? :)
To all who like Radiohead, have you seen their 'Just' video? That was one heck of a video. Although... it's one of those instances where they leave you dying of curiosity eh? :crash: Who can lip-read?

I listen to lots of different music. My favorites though tend to be hard rock like Rage Against the Machine, Metallica. I do listen to a lot of other stuff though, Disco, Motown, Zydeco, Punk, Show tunes...... I tend to like songs that can sing along too.
I'm not a fan of the singer/songwriter type of music.
So I guess there aren't any pop-lovers here? :)

Yeah, that's actually one of the 2 or 3 Radiohead songs I really like... the others I tend to like for short moments or not to like at all...
And the video makes you sit through it waiting and waiting...
As for pop, I guess not...not in the sense of mindless pop sung by girls/boys who cant sing nor write good lyrics but are just so beautiful or so undressed that most people think they're actually good...
I tend not to like very mainstream stuff, and most of all I tend to like music that has something to say, that is a means of expression, not just a commercial operation... I happen to like the occasional pop song, and there are some artists I dont like but I respect, while I find it hard to respect some kind of singers/bands who are there just to show off and most of all to make money... I happen to like the occasional poppy song, but not of the boyband/britney kind of pop... I divide pop into mindless pop, which I've just described, and pop which is...well, pop, but is trying to say something, even if not as deep as some real artists can....
I tend to be really radical about music, so I can express some opinion very strongly about what I think is not music but just marketing... (of course most artists do look at the market as well as at the art, but the true artists still try to say something, not just to please hormons...)

Of those that people have mentioned...
Tom Waits
Radiohead
Muse
The Killers
The Pogues
The White Stripes
Elliott Smith
Beck
The Faint
...all very awesome, all close to my heart. In addition, I'm a fan of...
Björk
Azure Ray
World Leader Pretend
The Fatales
Kasabian
Clearlake
A Perfect Circle
The Postal Service
The Dresden Dolls
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Sufjan Stevens
Iron + Wine
Weezer
...Oh, lord, countless others. Also classical (Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi), some American folk and folk-rock (earlier Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, and other more obscure people whose names I can't recall this moment), Celtic folk (Capercaille, Altan, and Anuna come to mind), techno/industrial (VNV Nation, Wumpscut, etc.), Irish punk (the Pogues, the Dropkick Murphys). And occasionally I go crazy over someone from a genre I don't ordinarily like, for instance, Vince Guaraldi (who did the jazz soundtracks to the Charlie Brown TV shows), and also the Buena Vista Social Club.
Whoo! That was pretty exhaustive. Pretty much the only genres I can't stand, with no exceptions, are country/western, hip-hop, and opera, although I'm sure I must have heard one or two arias I've liked.
EDIT: Oh, and power metal and screamy-hardcore. No.
