All the dogs are Communists. All the pigs are Republicans. All the horses are Liberals. That's really all you need to know. Just tell yer teacher that and I reckon' she'll give you an A+ just for being so perceptive.

i though it sort of reflected the whole communisty russia thing. like; they were looking for equality in communism, but it ended up a dictatorship because of ppl's (pigs) thirst for power. i thought they were all commies, but maybe i'm wrong.

Read the book for yourself. It's quite enjoyable, and I read it in four hours.

The Dogs are the KGB/Red Army, and the Pigs are the "Inner Party Members," dogs have force, pigs have brains. All requirements met to overcome the masses :(
Animal farm is essentially about Russia. Even the characters are so same.

I am going to be totally CRAZY and answer this in detail!
Animal Farm is an allegory/fable which depicts the growth and transformation of communism from initially being a revolutionary movement to finally as authoritarian a system as the capitalism it claimed to have displaced. At first, the humans who own the farm represent the capitalists/ bourgeoise. The animals stand for the proletariat who are ripe for revolution. The pigs are the leaders in this takeover and the whole project is initiated by the visionary idealism of Old Major ( a Lenin /Marx combination.) Old major however does not live to see his project actually put into action. Napoleon and Snowball (Stalin and Trotsky) are the ones who actually put the project into action. The humans are chased off, the animals take over and we have Animal Farm. But almost from its establishment, the rot also begins to set in. There is a power stuggle betweenNapoleon and Snowball, and Napoleon wins it by secretly rearing an army of dogs(the KGB) and drives snowball away after which he is continuously painted as a traitor and class enemy. The movement which had initially started off with the basic tenet of equality for all soon degenerates in the equivocal "Some are more equal than otheres" Stance. The pigs andthe dogs gradually move into the role of overlords vacated by the humans. The horses for example are made to worktill they drop and fially sent off to the butchers instead of being given paid retirment as the original plan had envisaged. The hens try to start a rebellion which is brutally suppressed by Napoleon and his army. Though one of the initial tenets was that Animal Farm would have nothing to do with humans/capitalists, Napoleon soon enters into trading alliances with neghbouring humans who run farms. The In group- the pigs and their canine army exploit the labour of the other animals to accumulate luxury for themselves and at the same time carry on a propoganda to convince the animals that they were much better off now, though the facts speak a different scenario. Finally, at a dinner party where pigs and humans get together, the other animals findthat they cannot distinguish between pig and man- the metamorphosis is complete and communism has become as authoritative andexploitative a system as the capitalism it sought to replace.
Before anyone thinks this is altruism- it's pure frustration- I want to stop thinking and posting here is the only way i can dothat right now as books, cassettes etc are all packed away! But IF it helps someone- well and good! ;)
