Im currently studying for my A levels and am doing my english literature coursework which is a comparison between two pieces of literature. I have read Vanity fair and am now stuck as to which other book/play to compare it with. i would like to be able to have strong connections with charcters and/or themes. I have read persuasion by Jane Austen but found the characters too wet and uninteresting. Pls could someone help me , all suggestions would be much appreciated x

What about JANE EYRE or WUTHERING HEIGHTS? Both were published around the same time as VF. While I adore THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY,as it is of a later period (1881), I don't think it would make a suitable study for comparison with VF.Trollope's oeuvre would possibly be more suitable, what about one of the Barsetshire novels? Possibly not THE WARDEN, maybe BARCHESTER TOWERS? Of course the most obvious comparative author is Dickens. I would suggest DAVID COPPERFIELD or DOMBEY AND SON, both of which were near-contemporaneous with VF and would seem to lend themselves to studies of similarities and dissimilarities quite naturally. I hope this helps you in some small way! Good luck!

I agree with Mickeymack since it's been a long time since I read a Portrait. Jane Eyre would work. Both Becky and Jane are lowly, not overly beautiful governesses, moving up by marrying into the family they work for and their insights into the people around them I think are similar. They're similar and yet quite opposites.

I think that Jane Eyre would be a good one too.
