Christine felt compasion fo Erik, i would dare say that also admiration for this insane man. admiration because of his srtenght, his conviction, his genius, and although she knows that the love he has for her has more todo with obsession than anything else, she feels him inside of her. so I do believe she does love him. That firts kiss that he recieve, that first and only kiss that he recieves from her was defintely not out of pitty.

Of course it wasn't pity! Raoul was right: if Erik hadn't been deformed and insane, Christine probably would have been more willing to stay.

I agree with both of you, that kiss wasn't pitty but I think it was't love too. I haven't read the book yet so I can't say something about that but I mean, for a very long time, Christine thought that he was an angel. She couldn't see him or touch him. Only his voice was always with her, so this made him unattainable. he was like a god to Christine that she admired, an inspiration for her voice.Raoul symbolize the innocent side and Erik smbolize the dark side of her. there are things, passions that are awakened inside her by Erik for the first time. I think this is why she is unstable between two man. both of them has a differnt meaning for her

She pitied Erik and appreciated him. She fell in love with him, but she love Raoul more.

I think she did love him, at one time, before he kidnapped her the second time/threatened to kill Raoul. See the line: "The tears I might have shed for your dark fate, grow cold and turn to tears of HATE!"
Plus, if she'd really loved him, she might've stayed with him and tried to change him.
(Notice I said "tried")
