Who should win it? I think that Margaret Atwood's novel Oryx and Crake is a great novel and a good dystopian novel and she should win it. Anyone else have any opinions?

If you haven't seen the nominees, here's a link:

p.s. sorry about the flood of posts, i got a little overexcited to find a literature board!

That's cool, you're very welcome. The more posts the better.

I had't seen the short list for the Booker Prize before that, and I haven't read any of those books, but I know that an Australian author, Peter Carey won it last year for The True History of the Kelly Gang, which I wrote an essay about in my English exam this morning.

Mantel won this year:

Hilary Mantel's "Wolf Hall" scooped the 50,000-pound ($80,000) prize. Mantel's novel charts the upheaval caused by the king's desire to marry Anne Boleyn, as seen through the eyes of royal adviser Thomas Cromwell.

Anyone read it? Is it wish list material?

Hilary Mantel has been awarded the Booker prize for Wolf Hall. I think that is the title; I've never heard of her or her book, but it sounds interesting. It is the story of Thomas Cromwell, First Earl of Essex, and his rise to power as minister to Henry VIII. I'm anxious to hear about it. Whose read it, and what are your thoughts?

Just heard her interviewed on radio 4. Very interesting on Tudor politics. She came up with the quote of the week. " If you made a mistake, you didn't get to spend more time with your family, you got your head chopped off."

Ahh those were the days

:banana::banana::banana: Yay, can you tell I'm delighted? Hilary Mantel is a wonderful writer. I am reading her A Place of Greater Safety at the moment, and my Booker shortlist set arrived yesterday, so I started WH too. Fantastic. I am so pleased she has won. I've never really wanted to read all of the Booker shortlist, but this year the judges seem to have chosen really well. A worthy winner, an excellent read. I would say if you haven't tried her, give her a go. She's just wonderful. :thumbs_up

Newsnight review (iplayer) had three former Booker chairs discussing the list last Friday. They gave Mantel gloweing praise. Interesting how well "historical novels" are doing these days.

So, does that tell anything about tomorrow's announcement?
