Dave Eggers: genius or overrated?

Just want some opinions.

I think that his stuff is good, but not genius while a friend of mine is completely obsessed with him and his works and thinks he's the second coming of Proust.

I've just read his first book of short stories, which I picked up in an Oxfam bookshop. I really enjoyed them actually, and found them really engaging, but I wouldn't say he was a genius, just very good.
