Hello everybody :)
I am a fan of Angela Carter and wondered if anyone has ever read any of her works? 'The Bloody Chamber' is possibly her most well known collection of short stories.
My favourite book of hers being 'The Magic Toyshop', I was wondering if anyone else has also read and appreciated her style? It is not agreeable with most people's tastes I have found!

I am an Angela Carter fan too. For me her best book was the last novel she published before she died, WISE CHILDREN. Obviously Shakespearian in inspiration and scope. But not po faced in the slightest, hilarious and heartbreaking in turn. A wonderful mix of pathos and bathos. The Magic Toyshop is a pretty amazing novel for a 27 year old to write but pales in comparison with Nights At The Circus and especially WC. Oops sorry about that acronym!Do you identify particularly with Melanie ? Why do you like TMT so much?WC is a joy to read so exuberant and loquacious. Ah the Chances and Hazzards! Just thinking about WC brings warm, loving memories!

WISE CHILDREN is a fantastic read. Angela Carter is one of the more talented writers I have encountered and grossly underappreciated in my opinion. You don't have to be a Shakespearian to appreciate the novel but it certainly helps. Her other work is also fantastic. I have to admit, I have yet to read her short stories. They sound worth the read.

Hi, I'm so glad to find people as enthusiastic about her writing style as I am. :) I haven't read any of her old ones but I personally love Wise Children and I'm currently reading Nights at the Circus. Bursting with Magic Realism and interesting characters, she is un-put-downable!!
I first had to read Wise Children for my English lit class but it is now officially my favourite novel!! I love the way that, as it was her last novel, she must have felt the urge to scatter her thoughts across a collection of pages in a completely unconventional way. She breaks down the binaries of legitimacy and illegitimacy and seems to engage the reader at all times.
Any recommendations for future Angela Carter reading? I have heard that her earlier ones are slightly darker but I am open to anything! Thanks

Angela Carter is being nominated for LitNet's book club...you have to have 50+ posts to vote, but the voting is not over until November 30th. If you guys want, play some of the games or something to get your post count up and you can vote for her...she might be among the twelve and then she can be read in the book club...share her work with others!
I have only read 'The Bloody Chamber' and enjoyed it a great deal. How do her novels compare with the short story collection? Which novel should I start with?

I read The Passion of New Eve last year (It was recomended by my english teacher). I'm afraid I don't know any of the ones you have all mentioned, but that one I do know. I found that the plot was hard to understand sometimes, a bit confusing, but I found it a very interesting read. I must confess, it inspired a story involving a character of a friend of mine. The story failed to take off (as many of my little story ideas do) but that doesn't change my opinion of the book.
It was a great read, not my usual kind of book, but that made it more interesting.
