I can't believe that after all the utter destruction and chaos hurricane Katrina caused that this one may be worse!

I hope that if any members are from the state of Texas that you have evacuated and headed North!
be safe Texas..

The size of the hurricane itself is almost the size of Texas! (http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/FLOAT/VIS/20.jpg) and it's effects will be felt almost for the entire state.
I offer my kindest sympathies to everyone in the region, as it seems that nature has not exactly taken much pity this summer and autumn. Secure yourselves, look out for each other, and stay safe.
it is really scary  it's like no...not again...

The first couple of bands of the storm will be hitting the Mississippi delta in the next couple of storms. Louisiana is going to get the stronger storm surge much like Gulf Port, Mississippi with Katrina. Louisiana is having a very bad couple of weeks.

I don't mean to make jest of the situation, but does this not remind you of the movie "day after tommorrow", I wonder if all of these disasters could be caused by pollution and global warming? :(

I frequently think that the Earth reacts to the negative energy given off by its inhabitants i.e. war, pollution, hatred, anger...the list goes on.

I do agree with you, the earth can only be what we make of it.

I'm raised in a household where "everything happens for a reason" is the motto. I think that the hurricanes are a form of punishment by the Lord Almighty.
Still, two massive hurricanes in one month is quite appalling--they even think that it's going to be larger and more devastating than the hurricane that hit Galveston, TX, many years ago. At least people are more prepared this time. :/

I think that the hurricanes are a form of punishment by the Lord Almighty.
I am sorry but I find your above comment very badly timed... when people are worried about their lives, their future. If these unfortunate events are the Lord Almighty's punishment, do you ever wonder why the Lord Almight almost always choose to punish the poor and the weak? When will the Lord Almighty start giving some rewards?
This thread has been started as a good will gesture, with those who are facing really horrible times in mind; please let's not turn into some kind of religious sermon.
I sincerely do hope that some lessons have been learnt from the previous hurricane and the US will cope better... that is, as well as they can on the face of such a destructive force.

I would not call that a jest, as I have thought the exact same; ironic that I just saw a speech by Al Gore a few weeks ago regarding this precise topic. The Day After Tomorrow seemed a little . . . dramatic, but the rising of temperatures due to trapping of greenhouse gases does exacerbate all storms, including thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornados, and tsunamis, and, though no severe changes in the ocean rising have occurred, it does not help.
Sorry to preach, as it all does not involve global warming, but it contributes a lot to the hurricane's destruction, no doubt.

I just finished reading the Ice Chronicles (http://www.upne.com/1-58465-061-3.html) which is about just that. About how the pollution is having an effect on the environment.

I was watching TV last night and in the news were talking about a hurricane that hit Galveston TX in 1900. It killed almost 8000 people. They said that Hurricane Rita is more dangerous than this. I hope that all people have taken their precautions to be safe.

Scientists have been warning for years about the Greenhouse Effect and everyone (lots of people) have been dissing it. They have told us that glaciers are melting, that the ozone layer was depleted. They have warned us about our addiction to fossil fuels, for years. What have we done? Maybe this is the time to clean up our act AND vote for a Green Party (something I NEVER, EVER would have said prior to now.
I have the most sincere sympathy for the people who ARE paying the price for our long neglected respect for the earth and every creature in it.
"What have they done to the earth? What have they done to our fair sister? Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her..............

My brother and his 4 month pregneant wife live in Lafayette, Louisiana. I talked to him yesterday, and they were getting the dogs ready to evacuate. Her parents had seven family members from New Orleans staying with them. I can't reach them, so I just have to wait for a call from my Mom with the news that they aren't stuck in traffic. Also all of my worldly possessions are in storage in Lafayette. I won't miss anything except the photos, a couple of volumes of my poetry, and the remains of my pared down library. The absolute worst would be if my desktop computer gets wiped out. It has all of my photos, about 1/3 of my poetry, and the digital art that I've been working on for several years. Please don't let that get ruined. Nothing to do but sit and wait...

b-mental my thoughts are with your family. I personally dont have family or friends there but I live in Oklahoma and we are going to be hit by the after effects with evacuees and with rain.

I talked to my brother, and everyone is fine. The dogs were a little scared, but other than that he said it was like a big family reunion for his in-laws. Their house was spared damage except for a big branch that fell on the fence in his back yard. He said that the rain flooded all the coulees and that some parts of town had standing water for a couple of hours. Thankfully the storm was a little overrated.
I still don't know about my stuff. I can just picture my books all wet and mildew growing on my double breasted suit. Oh well, I haven't worn it in a year or so, and it probably doesn't even fit.

Hi there:),
I just want to send my best wishes to everyone effected by Hurricane Rita. It's terrible that there has been two natural disasters so close together, but, at least this one appears to have caused less damage, though, I'm sure it must be a trying time for all involved.Once again, my thoughts are with you there!

my best wishes to everyone as well. it's really heartwarming to watch nbc's Today show...they have to be some of the most humane news anchors i've ever seen. not that i watch much tv, but still...
everything from hospitals to dolphins to reuniting people. i don't think something like this leaves anyone untouched. you become awed at what people can do for each other at times like these...
B-Mental, glad your family's safe, what a relief. :)
and maybe when you get your hands on your poetry you could e-mail it to yourself? once a friend lost her collection and that's what i've done ever since. so it's always accessible.
and please, everyone down South, return to your homes safely...

I never meant for my statement to be somewhat offensive for the matter. As for your question about why God punishes the poor, I won't get in to that.
So I'm sorry to Scheherazade and to all who found my notion rather insulting.
I found out the other day that two nursing students from the Louisiana area, who suffered from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, just got accepted to transfer from there to my nursing school to continue their education. Many of the scholarships that did not give full utilization (for various reasons) will pay partially for their schooling.
I thought that very generous, and I wanted to share. :)

i saw a few girls on the campus bus the other day and it they were saying that the teachers were making a big deal b/c they had to relocate here and giving them easier tests and letting them use their books but i am sure they gave them tution waivers from what they were saying our school has been very helpful in helping to provide an education to those displaced by the hurricanes.
I also saw the other day that Bo Bice (runner-up on the last American Idol) has donated his house to a family of four from louisana. I think thats just awesome that people are so willing to help each other
