Yesterday it actually didn't rain, (it felt kind of incomplete) so we were able to work in our backyard. Guess what we discovered? Tomatoes! about 20 little green ones. I guess because it's really hot and sunny during the day then at 4:00 it pours, there must have been a seed that took to it. We had a planter that until now had just been growing weeds. The trouble is we don't know anything about them. Does anyone here know how to grow them, or know of any sites with good info?

I'd suggest... if they've chosen to grow there they must be pretty happy. If there's tall grass or other plants around them I'd clear them away, let the light and air get to them, they can get mould/mildew really easily. (tho' that doesn't tyically harm the plant unless they're really young when they get it ie: 3-4 leaves or less)

Are they in grass or soil? If grass, I'd very carefully dig gently into the grass to loosen the soil and allow for water to get in better. If in soil gently poke fingers in soil around them (for both methods about a radius of whatever the plant height is: ie: if plant is 4 inches high `aerate soil' in ring starting from 4 inches out from plant)

You could try an organic fertiliser, it's a bit late in the season (not sure where you are either ;) as that could accelerate them growing fruit.

Uhm...my granfather, as every good Southern-Italian, makes his own tomato sauce... (and olive oil too, so we don't have to buy it), but i don't know anyhting about it as I'm a city-girl ;), so apart from boasting this, I have nothign helpful to say.

Tomatos are a wonderfull plant! :D
If you decide to grow them next season, it is best to get rid of the suckers. This will allow the plant to focus its energy on growing the fruit. :)
I picked up this bit of knowledge from a vetern tomato grower(?) 8)

As they get bigger they may weigh the branches down so you'll need some sort of support structure.

They sell them all over the place in garden stores in the spring... finding one now might be a little more difficult though.

I grew a bunch on my porch last year and tried making homemade sauce. My wife liked it but I think I picked them too early.
