Ethan Frome By Edith Wharton is a classic novel that takes place in the early 1900s. It takes place in Starkfield, Massachusetes(which I can't spell). The main characters are Ethan Frome, Zeena Frome(wife) and their "hired" girl Mattie Silver. Colors are VERY symbolic. The dark colors and adjectives used in reference to Zeena mark her cold, hurtful nature. The vibrant, descriptive shades which refer to Mattie represent the opposite.
The story is, presumably an engineer is posted in Starkfield and observes the wasted, crippled Ethan with interest. He(possibly she, but doubtful) begins riding to town with Ethan when the snow becomes thick. During a blizzard, they are stranded and he is (unusually) invited to stay at Frome's farm. he pieces the story of Ethan, Mattie and Zeena together, as it happened twenty-four years ago.
Ethan is married to Zeena, who is seven years his senior. He has, however, over the past year fallen in love with Zeena's orphaned cousin, Mattie, who has come to stay with them and help around the house. Ethan married Zeena because (a) he felt an obligation towards her after she came to assist his ailing mother and (b) because after his mother died, it was the middle of winter and he was very alone.
Over the course of the story, Ethan expresses his great desire to be with Mattie, Zeena seems to discover Ethan and Mattie's attraction and using the excuse that her doctor insists that she hire a better servant, Zeena decides to send Mattie away. Ethan plots to divorce her and run away with "Matt" out West. However, the Fromes are impoverished and there is no possible way he could support himself and Mattie. Feeling hopeless, Ethan decides that he will take Mattie to town. On their trip, many things are revealed and Ethan finally knows that Mattie loves him, too. The two hopeless lovers decide to take their own lives by "coasting" or sledding into a large elm tree.
The end goes back to the engineer/narrarator who, upon arriving in the Frome kitchen meets Zeena and Mattie, who is badly handicapped. His landlady, Mrs. Haile, who knew all three of them in her youth, finishes the story, of how, after the crash, Zeena came straight to town in spite of her "bad health" and took care of both Ethan and Mattie. Mrs. Haile says Mattie should have died and if she had, Ethan would have lived. She says there is hardly a difference in the Fromes in the graveyard and the ones on the Farm.
I've left out a lot of details, but this is an over view. Anything else?
