I am currently writing an essay on a piece of Amy Tan's Joy Luck Club. I was wondering if anyone else has read anything by Amy Tan. I have read The Bonesetter's Daughter. I really enjoyed and I enjoyed the movie of Joy Luck Club.
Unfortunately, I have not yet read any of her novels, but a few of her short stories, such as The Red Candle, Endgame, Waiting Between The Trees, and one of which a young Chinese-American woman visits her original Chinese culture (the title I cannot remember) in a recent modern literature college course. I found much of her work fascinating, and my instructor even brought in a small recording of a musical band she created with Stephen King, among others. If her novels seem as wonderful as her short stories and essays, I really intend on getting around to them soon, specifically The Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God's Wife; The Bonesetter's Daughter, you mentioned, I think consists of her most recent work.
Due to her heritage and family values, she seems to reflect much on the subject of culture, and, I have seen, many members of her original Chinese culture insult her for writing something, they claim, she knows little about; whether any considerable amount of truth lies in this statement, I have no idea. Regardless, I find her as one of the most admirable contemporary writers.

I think I noticed, with some interest, a while back, while looking for something altogether different, that sparknotes.com has something on Amy Tan, if that is of any help.
I saw the movie, and I was surprised that something so recent and current is in Sparknotes, but then I guess anything that is assigned frequently to students may find its way into sparknotes, and that the aura of august antiquity is not a prerequisite.

I read The Joy Luck Club for school once (and enjoyed it) and I believe I've also read one of her short stories. The story in question was about a girl who invited a caucasian boy over whom she liked and of her fear that her family's customs would freak out the boy and his family. Would any of you who are more knowledgeable about her works have any idea what I'm referring to?
Cheers

I quite enjoyed the Joy Luck Club. To some strange extent, I could see my own mother in some of the characters she portrayed. I don't know if this actually comes from Chinese-ness or culture differences or general disfunction, it may well be the latter.

the piece that i am writing about is when the main lady is young and her mother tries to make her into a child prodigy. She is the one with the mother that lost her first daughters in china. the piece is titled two kinds (as in there are two kinds of people).

i've read all of her books. i do like her style, but after a while you get the feeling that her stories are a bit too autobiographical.

A few days ago read a 3-4 page essay that was lively, endearing and persuasive. Can't recall title, but about her Mother's English speech patterns, why she intentionally selected English for a major instead of Math. Written with humor and spunk. I need to rent the movie "Joy Luck Club", and read more of her work.

I know this is a little late but Amy Tan's The Kitchen God's Wife, and the Hundred Secret Senses are excellent reads, the latter is one of my all time favorite books. And for any of her fans she has a new book coming out soon!
