View Full Version : What did you want to be when you were little?

I thought that since so many polls were set up by different people to know a bit more about the users of this friendly website, I thought perhaps one more may do no harm, and fulfill it's purpose at the same time.
Maybe some of you think back with fond memories of the childhood you had, or maybe of the daydreams you had of what you would have liked to become "when you grew up". Many kids ask that question today. It would be interesting to find out from each of you what you dreamed of. And perhaps it might help some poor kid who chances upon this website... :p Perhaps too, some of you might happen upon some goodly advice which you feel would have benefitted you had you known it before- post it too!
Could you please share with everyone what you wanted to be when you were little? Maybe, if you liked, you could also add whether that came true in your case, or whether you're still reaching that goal, or you have completely swung from that dream in the course of your life, and found something else that interested you better.
I have set up a poll that only includes different work ideas in the most general of terms, so feel free to write and specify.

I know that there are many more professions and careers available.... and no space for all of them. Here are 2 more I should have put up...
~Performing Artists
~Military Service (which most boys would have chosen)
~Writer
So even if yours is not on the list, please, please do let us all know....

I wanted to become a teacher; it felt only natural because my mother was one. During highschool I had a brief 'fling' with chemistry (which came to an abrupt end when I started taking Organic Chemistry!) but I have always wanted to teach.
I am one of those lucky people who have realised their career dreams, I guess! :)
PS: Adelheid, I have edited the poll for you to add other options.

I voted for other because there is only one thing I have ever wanted to do, manage Glasgow Rangers Football Club. All jobs I will ever have in my life are only to make money, not to fulfill any dream.
I have begun coaching kids soccer teams now instead, as it is the closest I will ever get.

I remember I wanted to be a musician and a doctor, I'm not sure which came first though. I quit wanting to be a doctor when I saw another persons blood and it skeeved me out. I don't know why I stopped wanting to be a musician, I have considered buy a drum set but that's on hold also since I am now living in a apartment...
Oh when I was at kindergarten I was sure I wanted to become a painter, which in later years, let's say from 7 to 10/11, modified into wanting to become a fashion designer. After that I soon realised that I really CAN'T draw, I really have no skills at all, and I have troubles even in drawing the simplest thing, and at school when we had art and had to draw my marks were a tragedy :D Also about the fashion designer, well I have very little esthetic sense and until a few years ago I couldnt care less about what I was wearing, providing it was jeans and a tshirt... LOL it's funny to look back on this things now.
(btw how does painter classify in the poll?)
Later on, when I was 16-17 I decided I wanted to become a journalist... For a while I sort of pursued the dream but then I kinds gave up, I dont think I have the active personality to do that kind of job... I sometimes think that maybe one day I could somehow get a job involved with journalism if life leads me that way, but I'm not dreaming anymore of being the special reporter writing from the other side of the world...
Or a translator, but it's such a hard consuming job, I'm a perfectionist in that and in the little experiences I've had it felt so... I don't know, terribly hard. Though that's a way that's still open.
Now I have no clue what I want to be, which is the funniest thing when you're a few months away from graduation :D

When I was little I always had the desire to be a lawyer involved in politics. Heh, that's actually still my career plan. Once I get out of high school and get my degree in political science, I'll be off to law school.

Better than I hoped.
the correct syllabic spelling is: bal-le-rì-na that is bahl-leh-ree-nah (two 'l' not only one, you have to pronounce them entirely).

Ehehe that was exactly my thought. Strange also cos in English there's the world ballet, evidently coming from French, but then the dancer suddenly becomes Italian lol :D It must be so funny to hear with an English accent ;)

I wanted to be an entertainer as a kid - sing, write comic sketches and act. Did a bit of everything (singing in a schoolband, perform as stand-up comedian, took a lot of drama lessons).. but the biggest compliment was always "you have a lot of guts".. and sometimes "you wrote that well, but performed a bit shakily" (as a stand-up comedian).
When I announced to all my friends and family that I want to 'only' write now - they all said "Ah, that suits you much better". As I have not written anything good yet, you can imagine what my singing was like :goof:.
Anyway, all the tests I did in highschool showed the same results: go and do 'something' with books. Either be a librerian or a school teacher or a writer.. So I guess I am finally learning where my talents might be :thumbs_up.
For a living I write short pieces for a magazine (journalist style - so not very creative, but it is interesting) and I put articles on a website. It probably made me want to write creatively even more.

No, ballet comes from Italian through French. (italian "balletto", that is something like "little dance", but then the notion of "little" was lost, explanation for foreigners)
French arts were all imported from Italy in the 16th century by the "De Medici"
Of course England's close relationship with France (Plantagenets and so on), and the great cultural egemony which France had been enjoying since the half of the 17th century, caused the spread of french-fashioned (is this phrase possible?) words in Britain and the most of the nations.

astronaut or scientist
Interesting thread!
As a child, I often aspired to being a scientist and writer; I excelled quite well in school in advanced placement science (mostly biology and chemistry) and creative writing, but eventually desired also direct contact with people.
Now, I remain near graduation in nursing school (a form of applied science), and try to write, in my funny sort of way. :p

i wanted to be a. a nurse and b. a stewardess. now i think nursing will be nice, of course, but i would also like to invent whole-body diagostic machines and wouuld also like to do research on the heart, as well as invent ways to treat various heart ailments. will have to take engineering courses at some point. plus i would like to become a linguist (italian, spanish, latin, asl (i know that's not verbal, but nonetheless)) and a mathematician. formulae seem to make intuitive sense to me and present themselves at random in normal life situations.
Sooo...
historian = archeologist
doctor or professor/scientist = scientist (research in labs - virology, microbiology) vet, neurologist, pediatrist, orthopaedist... ah, psychiatrist
teacher = just... a teacher, lol
others = astronaut, ecologic activist (that a profession? lol)
military = (ahem) pilot, I like the (modern - post WWII) fighters
that's about all I can recall right now... and I still have no idea what I really want to be... I mean, I'm still a 'little girl' ;) and I'm still in the phase of future-job-dreaming :p

Oops, silly me, I must not have thought clearly while typing the post. :p
No, rhetoricians do not consider 'we' termed as the third-person perspective, but a first-person plural. If you realized my mistake, I would have hoped you could correct me, rather than asking, but thank you for noticing the mistake.

I'm not sure I understand the difference, but ok: I will correct your future mistakes with simple declarative statements.
No, rhetoricians do not consider 'we' termed as the third-person perspective, but a first-person plural.
Your statement suggests that only rhetoricians consider 'we' to be a first-person plural pronoun. This is incorrect: everybody considers the pronoun 'we' to be first-person plural. That is to say, your statement would be deemed incorrect universally; not just by rhetoricians.

I apologize, Basil, as I have no intention of arguing, nor offending you.
Language, though having a specific part of the human brain for understanding (Wernicke's area) and forming it (Broca's area), does not prove as "universal," but, in fact, imaginary, imagined and organized by whatever culture developed the first expressive grunt and groan, but perfected by linguists, rhetoricians, writers, and etymologists (if I may, I recommend reading Simon Winchester's The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of The Oxford English Dictionary).
Calling the rhetorical 'rules and regulations' of a language universal, I think, assumes that possible aliens in outerspace speak English, and would never mistake a third-person perspective from a first-person plural, when far from everyone on our planet speaks perfect English (including native English speakers, like myself). This seems what separates language as universal from something imaginary - the tree grew before humans called it a tree.
Again, I do not intend on angering or confronting anyone, but merely desired to correct, what I thought, a linguistic mistake, and would prefer to no longer deviate from the purpose of this thread.

It reminds me of a style in a novel - I cannot remember which one, but I find it a charming choice of style  . I just thought it had extra meaning concerning this thread, which explains my question.
It also reminds me a bit of a boy in my class who always called himself 'Daniel' and 'he'. Other kids had to explain to me that he was talking about himself. First I thought he had a best friend he could not stop talking about..

When I was four I was put in school, a terrible thing because:a I sucked my thumb b. I was not used to children much, I was given a set of books and read them in the doggie basket in the kitchen while every one else went about their meaningful lives.
I learned to read and print by three but had zero social skills and all the kids thought I was either a doll to play with or a dork to avoid.
But already I wanted to write so for about a week I toiled over a story I made up, painstakingly printed, actually drew stick pictures for and with some help sewed the middle up with my fat hands and fat needle and thread. I was terribly proud.
I took it to my teacher At Victoria School and stood trembling by her desk as she silently went through it.
"We don't use pens until grade three" was all she said and made me go back to my seat.
I wish I had that little book back. But I did become a women's editor and have written ever since.
I was also in dance and music very young and wanted to compose my own lyrics and music and wanted to teach dance. Both have come true.
Now I want to be a great humanitarian like Mother Tereasa but so far only have a small street ministry. And I want to write very great books, so far only in the middle of, and whether they will be great only time will tell.
Still when I go outside at night and search the starry heavens I keep hearing a small
still Voice whisper to me to keep going even when all looks hopeless and I am beyond weary.
I hope for each and every one of you that your childhood dreams come to pass in one way or another.
Koa you are a fine artist with words and paint many pretty and rare pictures.

up till first grade, i wanted to be an engineer. but even now i'm not sure what an engineer does, so had to give that one up.
in the meantime, i got myself started on writing "stories" some time in first grade, and what i wanted to be ever since (till high school, that is) was a writer. :p
i only realized that fellow writer-wannabes of the world are a LOT, LOT more competitive than i would ever be (i didn't know many people wrote to be published and not for fun), so i switched gear to something practical.

Artist; I've been a doodler from the time I could dip my hand in fingerpaint. I was always the kid who got asked by other kids to draw their picture for them in school. Then around third grade I got it into my head that I wanted to be a philosopher, and that's what I told people. I wrote lots and lots of poetry from the ages of 9-12, and then I wanted to be a novelist. Then in high school I realized that I'd never, ever be capable of actually completing a story, and from then on it's been art again.
Now, I'm thinking, illustrator. Love books, love reading, love writing in fits and starts, but I would be passionately in love with illustrating children's chapter books. They were my original inspiration.
So, needless to say, I'm going to make lots and lots of money. :thumbs_up

i wanted to be an archeologist when i was really young but then it dawned on me that i would never make enough money to live off doing that, even if i do find something amazing.
i then thought that i wanted to defend my country. im probably the most patriotic person you will meet, and i simply love new zealand with my heart and soul. serving NZ just seems like the right thing to do after it has done so much for me. i dont know how i would feel going into battle in another country, because not many wars come our way down here. i would probably end up fighting for the UK in Iraq of East Timur or something like that, and i dont know whether i would want to do that. but i still feel asthough i owe new zealand something, and i still plan on joining the army some time soon, maybe after i finish university.
if that doesnt work out, the only fitting job for me would be in tourism here in new zealand, and promote new zealand in a positive light all around the world.

Then, I wanted to be in the Indian Foreign Service when I was 8 (I thought I would get to travel a lot that way); be a fashion designer when I was 9; an archaeologist when I was 11; a writer/journalist when I was 12; and then just confused!
Now, I'm studying economics so I hope to do something in research.

later on, I wanted to be an extraterrestro-linguist (or whatever they are called) because i read about them in science fiction books. most of them had PSI or other weird powers so they could pick up any alien language on the spot. i thought, hey if they can do it i can do it too. so whenever i overheard foreigners i pricked my ears and tried hard to pick up their language.. well, it didn't work... Teacher: Who is your father?
Ivanov: Stalin
Teacher: Who do you want to be when you grow up?
Ivanov: Astronaut
Teacher asks Petrov: Who is your mother?

Good one. Soviet anecdotes are great. Besides the fact that they are funny, they make us glad that we don't live at Soviet times.
Making a 180 degree turn,we remembered this little childhood dreams poem by Liselotte Raune:
Als mein Vater
mich zum erstenmal fragte,
was ich mal werden will,
sagte ich nach kurzer Denkpause

How about a song by Doris Day, which is rather becoming, I believe:
When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother
What will I be
Will I be pretty
Will I be rich
Here's what she said to me
Que sera, sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que sera, sera
What will be, will be
When I grew up and fell in love
I asked my sweetheart
What lies ahead
Will we have rainbows
Day after day
Here's what my sweetheart said
Que sera, sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que sera, sera
What will be, will be
Now I have Children of my own
They ask their mother
What will I be
Will I be handsome
Will I be rich
I tell them tenderly
Que sera, sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que sera, sera
What will be, will be
Que Sera, Sera

Unnamable, that is one scary spider! Are they the species of spider that's supposed to be one of the largests? They can be like 6 inches long or something. I walked into one of these (smaller than 6 inches, but still huge) once whilst climbing the Vietnamese jungle: The single most terrifying moment of my life. I almost fell off a cliff running and rolling around. Oh man, this picture brought back some horrifying flashes. :cold:

The intrepid Unnamable is back from his mysterious adventures! But where's his pith helmet? Did the tiger eat it? That's quite a picture, Unnamable. I did have to pause for a minute to wonder if I actually had seen a pic. of you before, though I dont think you've posted any, because It's amazing how much you look like my mental image of you--except that I thought your hair would be a little lighter for some odd reason. The tiger is precisely as I'd imagined him. Alas, this dispels any hope that you're actually the twin of your avatar. The great question however, is what you can possibly hunt now that could top a tiger? Snark perhaps my beamish boy? I suppose you could always start with that spider. Looks big enough to put up a bit of a fight.

I always wanted to be a Navy Officer till I turned about 13-14. Later, I decided to be an Archeologist or a Historian (I still love Geography and History). When I turned 18 I was a lead guitarist in a heavy metal band (classic heavy metal) and thought this was my future.
But I left the band in 2-3 months and gave up music. Always, since childhood I loved to read books and during that period when I left the band (18), I liked poetry for the first time ever and started to write my own poems and short stories (some were horrible though).
Now I'm a university student studying Business Administration (my father's advice, I hate BA). And I'm graduating in June and decided to join the army in July.

Now I wanna be an astrophysicist. :D I've always clung to the sciences ever so dearly.
I have other options, too. Something to do with designing, like posters, ads, clothing...I like art.
Art. Something to do with themes. Movies, books, museums, maybe I should be a critic?

When I was really little I had it in my head to become a librarian. Then, as I got a little older, I really liked the idea of becoming a teacher. Preferably kindergarten to about 3rd or 4th grade. Eventually I had my mind made up to be a dancer. Then injury prevented me from pursuing that. So, basically, all the things that I wanted didn't work out. I haven't given up the idea of dancing professionally in some sort of way, though! :)
When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be an archaeologist. As I grew older (at about age 10-13), I wanted to be a video game designer. Now, I still am unsure as to what I want to do. I have several ideas such as book editor, translator, writer, historian, etc. Heck, I just want to go to school for the rest of my life!

Well my earliest decision rendered that I would do my darndest to become a cowboy when I grew up. That was not to be cuz i am female, and I outgrew my affection for the cowboy industry ...
... Then it was to be that I would study rocks, perhaps Geologist, or anything that would let me handle my precious rocks. But this vocation was not to be... :(
... Then I really got into the piano, and aspired to be maybe a concert pianist -- BUT, my paws are toooooo small to accomplish much in a field where there are those who can easily manipulate the ivories without working at a stretch -- very frustrating, but this is a limited position vocation. So.....those are What I Wanted To Be When I Grew Up ideas. ;)

As I was brought up in quite an "artistic" surrounding (ballet from the age of 4, piano from the age of 5, often being taken to galleries, theatres and concerts by my parents when I was younger, etc), for a long time I wanted to do something along those lines. As a very young child I wanted to be a ballerina (which young girl who danced did not have that dream at some point in her life? ;)), but as I was growing up, more and more I was realising that it was not exactly my path and that I had too loose approach to ballet and the discipline it required to take it up professionally (so I eventually quit, after some 10 years of doing it).
When I was a bit older, I wanted to be a pianist, then figured I was too lazy for so the amount of practice and dedication required by a professional pianist, so I proceeded onto musical theory and pictured myself here.
I also had a phase of art photography when I was a child, and a short phase fo wanting to be a teacher. I never seriously pictured myself in any kind of science, it always oscillated between art and humanities. :)

However, my interest in ancient history grew (Egyptology in particular) and I desired to become an archaeologist - this lasted for approximately 4 years. When I moved up into Highschool, I was fortunate enough to have an absolutely amazing English teacher and her teaching along with my passion for literature, diverted my ambition from archaeology to the teaching of English Literature (preferabley at University standard).

I had a similar experience with a good teacher, such that he opened up doors to the aesthetic with his profound enthusiasm and easy going teaching methods to a class that was mesmerized (putting it mildly). Everyone danced out of that class with an A or B average... sorry to prattle away, but it was refreshing to read that someone else out there had this good fortune, too. :thumbs_up

I've wanted to be a vet for as long as I can remember. I've only recently narrowed it down to equine surgery. Weird that I'm actually working towards being what I want to be when I grow up. Does that mean I'm almost grown up?
I used to want to be a vet. Then I discovered that I faint when I get blood on me when its not mine...
Well, I can't recall ever wanting a particular job so I clicked other. All I could ever remember wanting to do was visit strange places, I used to spend hours reading my encyclopedias of all the new places I'd discover. I would tape 20 pieces of paper together and draw a giant world map by memory. Hmmm, when I was about 11 or 12 I think I decided I wanted to be a journalist or a writer or something along those lines though....

Since I have a love of animals, I wanted to become a vet. That didn't pan out since the sciences and such were not my cup of tea. For 23 years I had a very good job at the same company until new heads were brought in and everything went downhill from there, so I left.
I want to be a lawyer or a politician. I would do better at defense, but I would surely stay in the civil courts. I couldn't live with myself if I defended a murderer.
I can see me in college, though... I will be a roommate to a single elderly person, who I can take care of. I'll cook and clean and buy groceries. And every night at dinnertime he/she can tell me about the old days, or give me stories about "the war" (if my charge has knowledge of it).

I worked with a local Bulgarian/Russian theater company in Northern Virginia. They put on original productions, often based on Russian folklore or literature. They also put on some classics, like Chekhov. I starred in an original play, it was intense because we did 3-4 shows a week and it had a 2-month run. Other than that, I did some minor work with other theater companies in smaller parts. After the first exhausting experience, I wasn't interested in anything "big" anymore, and eventually gave it up entirely as a proffession.
