Another good book in a similar vein to 1984 and Brave New World is Fahrenheit 451.

As far as sci-fi goes, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K. Dick is a true masterpiece. "Dune" by Frank Herbert has a great political plot.
You might consider reading "We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin. This was written in Russia in 1922. It is similar in theme to both 1984 and Brave New World but written several years earlier.

You shd read LOOKING BACKWARD by Edward Bellamy, it was written in 1887. Bellamy was able to predict the use of credit card and mp3. Really a great book!!!

you might like Ayn Rand's stuff... start off small, like with "Anthem" maybe... "Atlas Shrugged" could take a while to get through
