Does yous guys care about: badder, grammar and punctuation? I frequent another website (non-lit) and there are routinely posts about bad grammar and punctuation and I'm always (and others) being corrected. Why doesn't that happen here? I would expect it more so here?

Well, I care when it gets annoying...I mean, anyone can make mistakes every now and then, and I wouldnt mind being corrected if I made some big mistake, but I guess there are people who literally can't write... I personally can't stand those who write online like it was a sms, full of abbreviations and such... Again, of course there can be some, but seeing a few lines all made of that awful sms-language drives me mad!
Punctuation is just, in general, useful... A guy from another forum forgot all the commas in one sentence once in an email he wrote me, and I honestly couldn't guess what he meant...

I really dislike when people talk like a live text message; punctuation missing makes a longer statement a bit harder to follow at times and grammar ... well, if I can find a grammar mistake I usually understand what's being said, if not I ask; no problems with causual as long as it's not txt talk, drives me up the walls.
btw, making enough grammar mistakes myself so who am I to critisize others :p

Improper grammar, in moderation, does not always bother me; I figure that the message, in itself, seems more important, and if someone still communicates the message in an semi-intelligible and comprehensive manner, I do not really mind. After all, these twenty-six letters and ten numbers merely represent ideas in the essence of communication and interaction.
When quoting, however, especially with writers, quoting in its original form I find very essential.
Other than that, the only thing that bothers me seems overuse of chat-lingo abbreviations, but, once again, in moderation, such as lol, brb, btw, wtf, wb, ty, yw, lmao, and gl.
*shudders

It used to happen a lot here papayahed ;) thankfully not so much anymore.

I'd by lying if I said it entirely didn't bother me, because grammatical and spelling errors do irk me at times, even my own, however in this context of informal `chat' style forum and discussion I am used to it now and look for content not quality.

If I'm reading an article or research paper that a PhD. student has `published' on their universities' website or is in their library, I expect much better quality! and lose a lot of respect if there are grammatical or spelling errors. Typos are another thing though.

I'm very happy though that forums like this are accessible to people who are blind, through Voice Recognition Software, or people who have dyslexia who have difficulty processing their thoughts and typing them, or people who are just plain bad spellers, it doesn't mean they're `stupid' or worthy of attack in my opinion. :)

Sorry Nightshade I meant that, ok, some people with dyslexia I know sometimes have trouble processing their thoughts and getting them out, whether it be saying them or typing them or writing them with pen.

No I don't use Voice recognition software, but someone I know does, it translates what they say verbally of course so, it does get garbled at times causing spelling errors, but that can be blamed on the machine, not the person :p

And I would think that if someone is using spell check say in a word document, that would get kinda irritating after a while if one was checking every single post they made in a forum.

Oh and the grammar thing, there are a lot of people here with english as their second language, so, that could account for `errors' too, but I'm glad they still contribute and can `practice' their english here.

Do you know how this works? I know a blind girl from another forum and I'm really curious about how she uses forums and emails, but I've never managed to ask (I actually think she wouldnt mind me asking but I'm still shy about it...). How does that work? She even graduated by reading her text books through a pc somehow, if I understood correctly...

Haha, I am one of those persons. My English grammar should be impeccable (there, I do not even know how you spell that) since I studied it eight years ago... but even my Dutch grammar is a bit.. how shall I put it.. rusty. I like reading comments that are eloquently written with good spelling and grammar and I would appreciate it if people correct me if my spelling is really awful. But I like the fact that I can just come here and talk about books without using a dictionary or worrying too much about my choice of words. It makes it easier for me to contribute.

I do not really mind the SMS-style - though I hardly understand any of the abbreviations (ouch, how is this word spelled?)

Talking about punctuation consider the following:

A woman without her man, is nothing.
A woman without her, man is nothing.

I hate it when people make mistakes in writing on purpose unless it's really smart and shows their intelligence  (eg in order to write sth ironic) rather than lack of it (ie a desire to show off). That's why I don't like Polish forums. There, I usually spot the mistake and it really irritates me, especially if the whole message is written like that :rage: In English I just don't pay attention :D

Btw I really hate some spelling mistakes in Italian. Some are understandable, but some just seem to show that the person didnt pay any attention at school.
I used to judge that way about English too until I realised that many native speakers make some mistakes simply cos English is not prononuced as it's written, so in their mind the words are spelt out like they pronounce them. I've seen people write 'forgotton' and then realise that to me it's easily 'forgotten' cos I read every letter with an Italian way of reading, but they just dont prononuce that sound that way. (though 'forgotten' should be one word that someone rather often sees written....)

I actually find that you write English impressively well, especially for someone studying it in the past as a foreign language.
As for troubles I have with English, while on the topic, and even as a native English speaker - I often have trouble with the ambiguity of sentences like the following:
"I watched the airplane land through the airport window."
Logically, this would imply that someone, through an airport window, watched an airplane land, but, strangely, it also can say that an airplane crashed through an airport window, and someone witnessed it.

Has anyone read Eats, shoots and leaves?
its all about (sorry cant spell it ) punctuation (is that nearly right??).
The Blerp is hilarious as are the little bits people have told me about.
I am going to read it as soon as I find the energy to drag myself home from this nice quiet comfortable library chair.
