oh dear now i realise why this morning i went out of home feeling my summer depression approaching...

though the day turned out to be a very positive one and so for one more day i'm safe from my summer syndrome.

and it's bloody hot and the buses suck even more (summer schedule, less buses, more people, no air conditioning in half of them :flare: )

I wish I was in the UK...the hottest days are like spring and the sun doesn't hit so hard. But for this year, no running away to the lovely England...:(

On friday we will celebrate midsummer, itīs an old swedish custom. We dress a giant pole in flowers and put it in the ground. Itīs a symbol for fertility. Children dance around it and sing songs. Itīs really quite strange when you think about it.

In the evening ther is usually a party, people are wearing garlands of flowers in their hair , and if you are traditional you can wear a white dress. And then we drink snapps and sing small songs about getting drunk. Thatīs usually how partys here begin and end.

A popular one is and old 1800 century song by a poet called Bellman. The refrain goes ( my translation)-

If you think that the grave is far to deep,
oh well, just take another drink
and then one more, and two and three
and you will die more content.

Yes, happy summer solstice to everyone in the Northern hemisphere!
I spent a very lovely day, taunted by allergies, in my first day of class of my one summer college course - psychology. :)

Summer School!?! Mono, that goes against everything that is right and natural! It's my little one's last day of school today and I'm as excited about it as she is! I wish I had papers to toss up in the air as we walk away from the school yard for our last time this afternoon!

Good luck with the course.

I share your precise optimism, kilted. This single course, a mere four credits, in no way compares in difficulty to my nursing courses, plus this class only meets once per week, so I will still have much time to enjoy the summer. :)

I still can't get why Americans go to school in summer
(you might have read this thought of mine elsewhere)

Hi everybody...
I just returned from the bonfire, which are a tradition here... It was my hardest summer solstice, sitting by the bonfire and mentally throwing so many things into the fire, "spring cleaning" my life and making room for the new year... I just hope this year I chose more wisely than last year, so that the months to come are better than those left behind.
Well, just in case anyone is interested, the tradition here says that, once the bonfire is lit, you should throw to it what you want to leave behind. Some people write things down on paper, others tie knots into a ribbon, one for each thing to leave behind, and then throw them to the fire. Others, like I did, just picture things leaving them and falling on the fire.
Then, once the spring cleaning is done, you should jump over a small bonfire, so that what you threw to the big one cannot go after you, in case it escapes the fire.
Additionally, there's usually music, drinks, chitchat and sometimes even a performance picturing druids, or white witches, or similar. For some people it's only a good party, for me it's kind of... a night to stop and look back and think.

Anyway, getting too philosophical, I think... Just... happy summer soltice to everyone.

Hehe... it is, at least for me :-) The good thing of it is that you can create your own version of it wherever you are, or whenever you feel you need it, just by lighting a candle ;-) Comes in handy when being away from home or tend to become paranoical with some things (like me ;) )... But, of course, it's much more fun with a biiiiiiiiiiig bonfire and other people... But well, when it's waaaaay too warm (still 31šC, and it's nearly one in the morning), the idea of a wee candle sounds much nicer ;-) Anyway, I had to "roast" quite a lot of things this year, so I finally went to the bonfires :-)

Well... wish you all the best... and wish myself a little bit of cool air so that I can sleep! :-)

Oh wow I could do my home-made version of it! :) It sounds nice to try and burn the crappy things of life!

My sympathy about the heat, I certainly know how you feel (well Im not sure I've ever experienced 31° at 1 am, but 27 at 3am is pretty close.. Today at 7pm we had 34 as well so...I feel ya)

Yeah LOL, that's why I say the Italian system doesnt work, 3 months of holiday are too long (of course the holiday within the schoolyear are very short)! Though in Uni it's not like that cos we have exams in summer... But the concept of class after mid-June is something that can't exist in my mind

Wow Keltic,
The bonfire thing sounds great. Makes me wonder what I would like to throw in the fire. Maybe something to try at home ;-))
