you cried three times:
when grandpa died
when nana died
when you saw
your baby
daughters living
in slums

but when you worked
those day-long
shifts it was
okay for your
new wife
to belt rage at
and belittle
one of them
for twelve years;
you defended
her decades later
after a while
the fire wears
away and everyone's got
clay feet
no one's perfect
to begin with

i expected
you to be but
...i guess most of
us take love where
we find it.

so i didn't
want to call
you yesterday,
but then i remembered
your smile, and
the way
you always lent
a hand, and
went out of your
way to teach me
mathematics, and
honesty, and gardening
and about the big
things like honor
and decency
and modesty
things like
not talking out
of turn
or even talking
unnecessarily
(i tell you,
dad, i may
never learn
that one!)
that i overlooked
because i thought
they were tiny and
unimportant
and i realized

you've done
your best
you've always
worked hard
worked from the
heart and given so
much more
than i may ever
realize.

and i'm glad
i remembered this
and happy,
after all,
that you're my dad.
