My favourite novel of Graham Greene's is The End of the Affair though most of his novels have reached high acclaim and many made into movies. He's also written a lot of travel books.

Hmmm, as for Anthony Burgess, I loved both A Clockwork Orange and 1985, so I would recommend either that sounds appealing.
