I was wondering if any of you would recommend any good books that you have read. I really enjoyed the book Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. I LOVED it. It is by far my favorite book so far. If anyone has read any books similar to it, I would love to read them.

I haven't read Lolita but I've read Umberto Eco and he's wonderful :D although a bit difficult to read t times. I recommend "Foucault's Pendulum".

Btw, there's a song by REM called "Wanderlust" ;)

The Brothers Karamazov is one of my favourties, along with Brave New World and Animal Farm (even though its a short read). If you havent read any of them, you should check them out :)

Winesburg, Ohio
It seems that few people mention it, but it is quite delicately written.

Haven't read Lolita or anything else by Nabokov but I just couldn't not to... you might want to try Jeanette Winterson's books if you're not too big on all the plot idea or unity of time and place kinda Aristotelean thingy.

If you enjoyed Lolita, then you probably would enjoy most of Nabokov's other books.

Anyone? Brief Summary?

What's Lolita about?

"Lolita" is similar in many ways to "Ulysses", just chock full of symbolism. The literal plot involves a man who loves young girls, finds one, and travels around the US with her. Follow the link below for a fuller summary.

"Description:
Despite its lascivious reputation, the pleasures of Lolita are as much intellectual as erogenous. It is a love story with the power to raise both chuckles and eyebrows. Humbert Humbert is a European intellectual adrift in America, haunted by memories of a lost adolescent love. When he meets his ideal nymphet in the shape of 12-year-old Dolores Haze, he constructs an elaborate plot to seduce her, but first he must get rid of her mother. In spite of his diabolical wit, reality proves to be more slippery than Humbert's feverish fantasies, and Lolita refuses to conform to his image of the perfect lover."

I also found it disturbing until I realized that it is almost completely symbolic.

I know the feeling. There is much more below the surface than in the literal reading. I would like to take the time to figure out everything.

Yeah, that's where I came up with the name. Nightwish is one of my favorite bands.. <3.

Also I was thinking about reading "Ulysses", but isn't the novel based around religion and the bible? I'm not really a biblical kind of person. Anyways, thanks for all the recommendations! I'll be sure to look at some of them. :)

Ulysses is a stylistic, masturbatory fantasy.

Ulysses is worthwhile. It is a symbol filled wandering of a day. some of the symbols are religious in nature, but much of the symbology is from mythology, consider the title.

But I live in Canada, so they never come here for concerts, and there are so many metal festivals in Europe. I'm jealous.

Oh! But Stratovarius is coming in October, so that is something to look forward to. But I should stop talking about music. This isn't the appropriate thread for the topic.
