Hey guys! I am reading Joyce's "Dubliners." It's beautifully written, esp. the last story "The Dead." But it's not that easy to understand. Here is a question: what's the significance of Gabriel's speech for the theme of the story? Can anyone answer it for me. i will appriciate it very much.

Put it down. IMO, Joyce is simply not worth the effort.

Y'know, Razeus, there's a glaring irony in your post and your signature. The Dead is a very rewarding story, despite its difficulties, it is worth the effort. Joyce's work is a part of the world's greatest literature, the canon, for a reason: because he pushed the boundaries of style and thought.
