The criticisms of this book as being tedious and lacking in "action" are misguided at best. This novel describes elements of abstract human psychology in a gripping fashion, making detailed and insightful observations of character flaws inherent in every individual. This piece is not exciting to those concerned only with outward action. The excitement comes when the reader is insightful enough to follow the evolution of the characters' psyches, motives, and interactions with those of others. This work is highly inspiring to anyone examining the human condition; I also highly recommend the film that was based on James' work, The Heiress.
